THROWBACK THURSDAY: DRIVER’S ED! 🚗

Remember when learning to drive meant climbing into a car that announced DRIVER EDUCATION to absolutely everyone you passed? 😆

No backup camera. No navigation. No lane assist. Just you, an instructor, and the terrifying knowledge that everyone on the road knew exactly what you were doing.

This great photograph from our collection takes us back to the days when Driver’s Ed was a true rite of passage.

Throwback Thursday…Chestnut Street

Before pavement, electric lights, and automobiles, Chestnut Street looked like this. (Circa 1890)

This view looking east from Wharton Street captures what was once Milton’s second commercial hub—complete with muddy wagon tracks and neighbors gathered beneath the awnings.

And two familiar landmarks remain: 314 and 315 Chestnut Street are still standing today.

🌸 WE’VE LOST CONTROL OF THE PAGE. 🌸

Once a year, the lilies behind the Milton Historical Society arrive, put on an absolutely shameless display, and promptly take over our social media for the day.

Frankly, we know when we’ve been outclassed.

So today, no artifacts. No lectures. No history lessons. Just these magnificent annual visitors enjoying their brief moment of complete institutional dominance.

They’ll be gone far too soon.

On August 13, 1909, fire swept through the heart of Milton, forever altering the town, its streetscape, and its history.

Today, exactly 117 years later, the Milton Historical Society marks the anniversary with this month’s Virtual Lecture Event: The Great Fire of Milton, 1909.

Through historic photographs, documents, and the stories of those who witnessed its aftermath, we revisit the fire that devastated a significant portion of downtown Milton.

When History Comes Home…

Today, we were honored to welcome Betsy Baumeister, granddaughter of Dr. William E. Douglas, along with Katie Sarver, his great-granddaughter, to experience Milton in Black and White—the exhibition showcasing Dr. Douglas’s extraordinary photographs of early Milton.

Joining them was Milton Historical Society Board Member Phil Martin, whose research helped bring this remarkable collection to life.

It’s not every day the family of the photographer stands before the very images that continue to tell Milton’s story. Moments like these remind us why preserving our community’s history matters.

Throwback Thursday | Source of the Broadkill River 🌊

This early 1900s photograph from our archives captures the source of the Broadkill River in Milton, Delaware. A spillway can be seen in the foreground, with the mill and several homes visible in the distance. The title, “Source of Broadkiln River, Milton, Del.” was scratched directly into the photograph’s emulsion by the photographer.

A remarkable glimpse of a familiar place more than a century ago.

One of the afternoon’s highlights was welcoming fellow genealogist Chris Puda, (his business card in the photos for this post), who stopped in to explore the Research Center and connect over our shared passion for preserving family history. Conversations like these remind us that every researcher—whether just beginning or decades into the journey—starts with the same question:
