Asa Waters Mansion Historic Georgian Colonial estate in the heart of Massachusetts. Available for private events.

The Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission lists the Asa Waters Mansion as "the finest example of Georgian Colonial style in the country." The Mansion is not only one of the most beautiful buildings in Millbury, it has a proud history –part of the "Underground Railroad" during the Civil War, it is registered on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Lovingly restored to its original splendor, the Asa Waters Mansion provides a stately setting for community gatherings, wedding, seminars, and parties.

In November 1826, Josiah Holbrook convened the first meeting of the American Lyceum Movement in Millbury. Among them were manufacturing workers and farmers.

The movement rapidly spread to other towns in Worcester County. Between 50 and 60 lyceums existed in New England barely 24 months after the first meeting in Millbury, Massachusetts.

The American Lyceum Movement was founded here in Millbury in 1826 by a group of local citizens, encouraged by the visiting lecturer Josiah Holbrook. The movement spread across the United States, creating community forums for lectures, learning, and civic discussion—an idea that influenced American public education and adult learning for generations.

Josiah Holbrook envisions lyceums as gathering places for not only adult males, but also women and children. He took pride in keeping the content of the lyceums free of controversy and tension. He viewed education as separate from partisan politics and sectarian religiosity.
