Test your knowledge of Millburn School History! Here are 4 former Millburn Township Public Schools. Only one of these buildings is still standing today, but it is no longer a school. Who can name the schools and where they were. Let's worry about dates later!
If you don't want to work that hard, visit our online archive at: https://mshhistsoc.org/ and explore the archive. There is even a tab for schools!
If you like what you see, feel free to become a member of the MSHHS. We are a donor-supported non-profit organization. Proceeds go towards the preservation of historical artifacts, educational outreach and maintaining our digital archive.

Happy Birthday Stewart Hartshorn!
Stewart W. Hartshorn, founder of the Short Hills community was born on August 28,1840 and would have turned 186 years old today. Known to millions as the inventor of the roller shade (he actually perfected and patented the spring lock that ensured the safety of the roller and enabled the shades to be fully adjustable), to most of us in the Millburn area, he is best known for his contribution to the development of Short Hills.
In 1874, Hartshorn moved his family from Springfield to Short Hills and constructed his homestead at the Crescent. Over the next decade, he set about building an ideal community comprised of carefully designed homes, winding roads, and beautiful vistas. Hartshorn's contribution to Short Hills extended far beyond aesthetics. A scientist and inventor at the core, Hartshorn focused on creating a town infrastructure that would confirm to the latest advances in sanitation, including a state-of-the art sewage system and a special wind-powered water pumping station.
Hartshorn also maintained a strong presence within the larger Township of Millburn, contributing money and resources to the entire Millburn community.

A few of our favorite pieces, that help bring the William Parsil house to life! These everyday objects might not seem so familiar to today’s lifestyle, but in the 18th century, they were common in many households. Tell us what you think they are & how they may have been used?

Keeping Millburn healthy is a major component of the Township Health Officer's job. Looking through our archives, we come upon two important women who held this position. The first was Bessie A. Bosworth, who held the position from 1948-1962. The second was Mrs. Ruth Gray, who served from 1963 until her death in 1968. Both women were RNs, who earned acclaim and respect for their expertise at the municipal and national level. We are fortunate to have material on both these extraordinary women in our archives. Here we have Ruth Gray's diploma from Seton Hall University and some clippings from her time as head of nursing at the Neighborhood House and as a leading advocate for the Sabine Oral Polio Vaccine.

Anyone remember the Millburn Dairy? Don't worry if you haven't. The Millburn Dairy was a short-lived enterprise on what is now Gero Park (White Oak Ridge Park if you prefer). Earl James was granted a license to operate a full-fledged dairy establishment on October 1, 1934 on the township poor farm. When James proposed his plan to the Township Committee in July of that year, he offered to take a 5-year lease at $35/month on the condition that the town furnish material to fence the farm. The TC agreed. So, James got his dairy farm--but that's where the story ends. Except for these bottle tops, there is no further information on the Millburn Dairy.
