On October 15, 1966, a delighted crowd gathered at Glen Avenue and Lackawanna Place to witness the cornerstone laying of the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad building. Among those present were Police Chief Frank Stoeckle, Squad President Alfred Freibel, Mayor Ralph F. Batch, Squad Captain Clifford Zimmer and Squad Vice-President William Manrodt. The simple one-story brick building, which had been long awaited, went up quickly. It was dedicated less than 2 months later on December 11. Stop by the building and check it out, learn more about our amazing MSHVFAS, and support their work by attending their inaugural 5K Race this Sunday.

How does it feel to live in a "Home of Tomorrow?" To buyers in 1948, these were the cutting edge models designed by the office of Emil A. Schmidlin. Promoted for "the man of discernment, who considers not only his present needs, but also the future of his investment," they featured modern conveniences for the housewife such as built in laundry and the latest in kitchen appliances.

Did you know that National Fire Prevention Week is more than 100 years old? Proclaimed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925 as a way to educate the public about fire prevention and safety, it is as important nowadays as it was a century ago. The Millburn Fire Department continues to play a critical role in spreading the word to the community.
Here are a few glimpses of Fire Prevention Week activities in Millburn from past to present.
1. Millburn Fire Chief William Stoeckle, Fireman James Tansey and Fireman Harry Lore make inspections during Fire Prevention Week in October 1959.

2. Firefighter Jeff Wanamaker gives fire safety tips to kindergarteners at South Mountain School in October 2006.

3. Millburn Fire Department personnel teach preschoolers the latest in fire safety all week.

Don't forget to visit the Millburn Fire Station on Saturday, October 10, 2026 from 12-2 pm for their annual Open House and to wish them a HAPPY 150th Birthday!!!
