Decorative art is designed to complement a space, matching colors, styles, and trends to make a room feel complete. Fine art goes beyond aesthetics; it’s created to express an idea, tell a story, or evoke emotion.

While decor is often mass-produced and easily replaceable, fine art reflects the artist’s unique perspective and creates a deeper connection with the viewer. One is chosen because it fits its surroundings, the other is chosen because it commands its surroundings.

Since childhood, Andres Alvarez has spent much of his spare time drawing, exploring ways to develop his understanding of art and self-expression. This practice continued when Alvarez moved to The Bronx, New York from the Dominican Republic when he was 18 years old.

He focused on drawing and painting subjects that he saw in person, continuously learning through his own practice. However, the vision for his current line of work, which he describes as Abstract Surrealism, only came to fruition at a later point in his life. He feels the timing was perfect.

Do you think there's a "right way" to experience art?

Some people may be drawn to color, others to technique, subject matter, or emotion. A single artwork can speak to different people for different reasons.

That's part of what makes art so powerful. It can connect us to universal experiences, like loss, hope, disappointment, and love, but also mean something unique to each person.

There may not be a "right way" to experience art. Only your way.

“Let us go and make our visit” by Guillermo Bublik — original artwork at J. Nunez Gallery, Millburn.

Guillermo Bublik grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and came to the United States to pursue a graduate degree in Physics. He started painting in late 2018 after retiring from a long technical career, and thinks that art and science are but two different ways to find beauty in our universe.

Guillermo regards his painting processes as similar to the art of solving equations. He uses techniques that leave room for unexpected effects and ‘oops’ moments, believing that incorporating these into the final product leads to stronger results.

Which piece feels more 'human' to you? Option A or B?



Option A is an original piece entitled “Sound Wolf” by New Jersey-based artist Cynthia Pareja Dubin. Option B is the same work after being processed by an AI system prompted to make it “look better.”

Although AI can replicate color palettes and follow conventional aesthetic principles, some may still find Option B to be lacking a key element: soul.
In a time when images can be generated and replicated instantly, the role of human artists becomes less about technical output and more about the human experience and perspective.
Supporting local artists is one way of keeping that human presence visible in everyday culture.

“Overgrown L.A.” by Kirkland Bray — on display at J. Nunez Gallery, Summit.

A layered landscape where nature feels exaggerated, cinematic, and almost imagined. Palm trees, cypress silhouettes, dense textures, and saturated California light come together in a composition that sits somewhere between observation and memory.

What makes this piece work especially well in person is the contrast between the calm blue sky and the amount of movement and detail hidden inside the foliage. The closer you get, the more the painting reveals itself.
