This feature of Milford Harbor is the submarine Explorer, the last such craft built by Milford resident Simon Lake. A marine engineer and architect, his company held over 200 patents for submarine design and built 26 ships for the US Navy during World War I, losing to . The Explorer was designed for freshwater lake exploration and research, and could move either by its propeller or wheels on the craft's bottom.

The Stow Memorial in Milford Cemetery. In 1777, a British prison ship dropped off 46 American prisoners of war at Milford, many suffering from smallpox. Captain Stephen Stow volunteered to tend for them, but himself succumbed from the disease.
