We're excited to be making our rounds to all of our The 1772 Foundation, Inc. grant awardees! First up is the Milford Historical Society who received funding for the Eells-Stow House for a new cedar roof. Built in the early 18th century, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Historical Society's campus which includes two other colonial buildings that were moved onto the site.

Built by local magistrate Samuel Eells, the house would be better known for later owner Captain Stephen Stow and his wife Freelove Baldwin Stow who, during the Revolutionary War, nursed some 200 American soldiers that had smallpox. This act would be the end of Capt. Stephen Stow as he also contracted the disease and died in 1777.

The Eells-Stow House was saved from demolition in 1930 by the Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Milford Historical Society was organized shortly after to help save the site and manage it. During the early 1980s, the house needed to be restored due to structural issues and this work revealed the basic structure of the framing when all the clapboards, sheathing, window frames and sashes were removed. Traditionally it was believed the house dated to the late 17th century, but investigations into the framing suggests a later date of possibily c. 1720. Regardless of its original construction date, the building is a beautiful example of early colonial architecture and Preservation Connecitcut is happy to help facilitate its continued preservation.

🇺🇸 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 "𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮"

This Wednesday, 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟴𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝘁 𝟱:𝟰𝟱𝗽𝗺, the public is invited to gather on the steps of City Hall for a very special moment in America's 250th anniversary celebration.

Communities across the nation will come together at the same moment to read the Declaration of Independence aloud — just as it was first read publicly to citizens in Philadelphia's State House Yard on July 8, 1776.

While July 4th marks when Congress adopted the Declaration, July 8th marks the day it was actually shared with the American people for the first time.
Now, 250 years later, we have the chance to be part of that same tradition, to hear these founding words while gathered together.

📜 What: A simultaneous, nationwide public reading of the Declaration of Independence

*Reading will begin promptly at 6:00.

Pirate's Day on June 7 will feature a harbor invasion by Captain Kidd, live entertainment and a treasure hunt. AND, if you come to our front lawn at 34 High Street between 11 and 2, you'll see the Free Men (and women) of the Sea — a reenactment group that portrays pirates and privateers.

The Milford Historical Society is hosting a free community program about the history of Milford Hospital on Monday, March 16 at 7 pm at the Mary Taylor Memorial UMC on South Broad Street in Milford. The guest speaker is Karen Kipfer, who has more than 20 years’ experience in hospital administration, communications and community relations. She currently serves as the Site Administrator for the Bridgeport Hospital Milford Campus. Refreshments will be served and donations accepted.

Historian William Legere will present a program on General George Washington and his role in the American Revolution on Monday, January 19 at 7 pm at the Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church on the Milford Green. Legere will focus on the role of African Americans in the Revolution and George Washington’s gradual growth, acceptance and appreciation of these soldiers. The Historical Society’s community programs are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
