At Home with the Pinchots” was truly a capstone event at Grey Towers National Historic Site this season.

Guests stepped back in time as talented actors brought James, Mary, Gifford, Cornelia, Theodore Roosevelt, and members of the Pinchot household vividly to life through realistic portrayals, captivating stories, and dramatic interactions that conveyed the extraordinary Pinchot legacy for Milford, Pennsylvania, and the nation.

From conservation and public service to social reform and family life inside Grey Towers, the experience was educational, inspirational, and unforgettable. Adding to the immersive atmosphere, attendees enjoyed refreshments served from the Pinchot family kitchen and gathered in the historic Finger Bowl, further experiencing the warmth and hospitality of Grey Towers as a lived-in home.

The response from attendees throughout the day was overwhelming: this was a “not to miss” event that showcased exactly why Grey Towers National Historic Site remains such a unique and invaluable place to visit.

“One of the most engaging and immersive historical programs I have ever attended. It felt as though the Pinchots themselves had welcomed us into their home.” — Event Attendee

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and helped make this remarkable experience possible.

Grey Towers Hosts 4th Annual Scouting Forestry Merit Badge Day

Grey Towers Heritage Association recently hosted its 4th Annual Scout Forestry Merit Badge Day at Grey Towers National Historic Site, welcoming 32 Scouts for a full day of hands-on learning focused on forestry, conservation, and environmental stewardship.

Despite rainy weather, Scouts explored topics including forest management, tree and invasive insect identification, the importance of our national and state forests, and the conservation legacy of Gifford Pinchot.

DCNR State Forester Austin Noguera led much of the day’s programming, guiding Scouts on a hike through the grounds while reinforcing forestry concepts and answering questions along the way. Scouts also had the opportunity to interact with professional forestry tools and equipment. Austin’s experience as both a forester and Eagle Scout created a strong connection with participants throughout the day.

Scouts also climbed the restored 1921 Fire Tower along the Forest Discovery Trail and visited the replica Yale School of Forestry camp, which reflects the historic forestry training once conducted at Grey Towers in Milford.

The day concluded with an engaging tree walk led by local tree expert Dr. Paul Kovalski, well known for Grey Towers’ “If Trees Could Talk” program. His combination of technical knowledge and storytelling helped bring the forest landscape to life for participants.

By the end of the program, nearly all participating Scouts completed the requirements for the Forestry Merit Badge, bringing the total number of Scouts earning the badge at Grey Towers to more than 125.

As the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service and the Boy Scouts of America’s first Chief Scout Forester, Grey Towers remains a fitting place to inspire future generations of conservation leaders.
