Fredric Snitzer Gallery is pleased to announce La Parisina, an exhibition of new paintings by Cuban artist Rocรญo Garcรญa, conceived during her 2026 residency in Paris at Noemรญ Espace Brownstone Foundation.

Drawing inspiration from twentieth-century French art, particularly Henri Matisse, Garcรญa explores themes of love, eroticism, and shifting power dynamics. Through expressive color, pattern, and cinematic storytelling, a female protagonist moves through intimate, psychologically charged scenes of provocation, desire, and hedonism. Blurring the boundaries between reality, fiction, and metaphor, La Parisina evokes a nostalgic vision of Paris, where memory and imagination intertwine.

Marielle Plaisir (French and Guadeloupean, born in Le Havre, France; lives and works in Miami, FL) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, textiles, film, and performance. Rooted in Caribbean and European histories, her work examines systems of power, domination, race, class, and social inequality, bringing histories and lived experience into dialogue with the present.

Beauty is central to Plaisirโ€™s practiceโ€”not simply as an aesthetic language, but as a means of questioning, disrupting, and reclaiming representations historically shaped by power. Through richly layered figurative and symbolic worlds, critique coexists with imagination, resilience, and the possibility of alternative futures.

In โ€œAfter Icarus,โ€ Plaisir takes the myth of Icarus as a framework for considering the contemporary world. Rather than focusing on Icarus as an individual figure, she approaches the fall as a systemic conditionโ€”one in which certain bodies, histories, and experiences disappear from view while the world continues uninterrupted.

After Icarus will be on view September 10โ€“October 10, 2026.

Marielle Plaisir's contribution to Heat Index, The Fall of Icarus IV, reimagines the classical myth through an exuberant vocabulary of luminous color, ornamental pattern, and organic abstraction that resists a fixed narrative. A floating unicorn, branching forms, and sweeping painterly gestures evoke a dreamlike realm where aspiration, fantasy, and impermanence converge. Rather than illustrating Icarus's fall, Plaisir transforms the ancient myth into a poetic meditation on resilience, vulnerability, and renewal, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty that emerges through transformation.

Marielle Plaisir is a multimedia artist who has been exploring the concepts of domination and supremacy for many years. While a painter first, with this affinity, she considers herself an activist artist. In her practice, it is important to find and use the most effective medium to intervene and distill or convey my narrative content.

Plaisirโ€™s work is first and foremost a research laboratory based on documentary history, as well as literary and sound sources that she mines to recombine as visual tools in production. She, therefore, works fluidly in many media and may realize a concept in distinct materials, such as a porcelain and bronze sculpture, a series of drawings, paintings, monumental work in cut metal, or as natural fiber textiles. Many pieces combine different media to ignite the imagination, evoke emotions and capture universal cultural truths and aspirations by engaging powerful visuals, imagery, and histories.

In this work from ๐˜›๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜“๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ, Kayla Delacerda uses text as both language and image. Lines of handwritten words stretch across the canvas, creating a dense visual field where some phrases can be read clearly while others fade into layers of color and mark-making.

As the eye moves through the painting, moments of recognition give way to abstraction. Fragments of thought surface and disappear, creating a push and pull between what can be understood and what remains just out of reach. Rather than delivering a single message, the work invites viewers to spend time with its shifting rhythms, discovering meaning through both reading and looking.

The result is a painting that feels deeply personal while remaining open-ended, reflecting the ways memories, emotions, and inner dialogue often resist clear expression.
