Join us for Audible Systems: Held / Garet + Matamoros at Deering Estate! A program of intermedia works exploring sound, image, and perception as interconnected systems.

Barbara Held and Richard Garet – Nine Movements (2024) A durational audiovisual work structured in nine interrelated sections, developed through an open and iterative collaborative process. Flute, analog synthesis, and field recordings interact with moving image processes that explore luminosity, signal behavior, and temporal transformation. Sound and image unfold in reciprocal exchange, forming a continuously shifting perceptual environment.

Gustavo Matamoros – Tone Poem in Surround (2025) A work for amplified text, small piano sounds, and radio speech presented in surround sound. Combining live writing, intimate physical gestures, and shortwave transmissions, the piece unfolds as a sequence of brief sonic events — “audibles” — defined by texture, action, and spatial presence. Speech, memory, and interference intersect within a layered acoustic field.

Deering Estate in partnership with The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery presents Hyphenated Encounters by Lilian Garcia-Roig, curated by Sophie Bonet and Liliam Dominguez. This two-part exhibition will open with a reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, and will remain on view through January 17, 2027.

Hyphenated Encounters offers an expansive look at the work of Cuban American artist Lilian Garcia-Roig, bringing together a career-spanning survey of her artistic practice with a focused presentation of work created during her 2024 Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence residency. Together, these complementary exhibitions offer the most comprehensive presentation of Garcia-Roig’s work to date, pairing a career-spanning survey with an intimate look at the artist’s site-responsive practice through her 2024 Deering Estate residency. Presented across two distinct but interconnected curatorial projects, Lilian Garcia-Roig: A Practice of Place, curated by Sophie Bonet, Chief Curator of The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, traces more than three decades of Garcia-Roig’s evolving relationship to place through paintings and mixed-media works. Deering Estate Residency: Lilian Garcia-Roig, Site, and the Labor of Belonging, curated by Liliam Dominguez, Head Curator of Deering Estate, centers on work developed during the artist’s 2024 residency, highlighting her site-responsive approach to painting through new works and an accompanying short film by fellow Artist-in-Residence Jorge Gonzalez Graupera.

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 17th, 2026 | 6 pm - 9 pm

The Deering Estate Presents High Tide Low Tide, an exhibition featuring Mette Tommerup.

Rooted in both Miami’s tidal geography and Mette Tommerup’s Scandinavian heritage, Tommerup’s practice draws from a Nordic tradition of reduction - an elemental paring down that foregrounds atmosphere, light, and spatial perception over representation. Ocean, earth, dusk, and the auroral phenomena of the northern lights operate not as imagery but as structural conditions: forces that dissolve boundaries, destabilize orientation, and expand the field of painting beyond the wall. Through these immersive spatial propositions, she positions painting as a phenomenological encounter-an embodied threshold where architecture, landscape, and viewer converge.

High Tide Low Tide unfolds as a cycle of five public interventions inspired by the rhythms of the sea. Rather than representing the ocean, the project follows the movement of the tide itself its continual revealing and concealing of landscapes, memories, and emotional worlds. Across all five interventions, High Tide Low Tide proposes that creativity moves like the sea itself. It arrives in cycles. It uncovers hidden landscapes within us before gently covering them again, reminding us that what disappears is never truly lost. Beneath every shoreline and within every person another world waits for the tide to return.
