This , we look back a century into Miami's past, to the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926. A Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of approximately 150 mph and storm surges reaching up to 11 feet when it made landfall on September 18th, 1926.
The images shown are scans of Chicago Tribune newspapers dated September 21, 1926, noting that the Deering's remained at their Cutler estate during the hurricane. One report stated that the home of Charles Deering sustained significant damage, though everyone in the household was unharmed. Another article confirmed that Mr. and Mrs. Charles Deering were at their Florida residence in Cutler and had been unable to contact associates in Chicago. It also emphasized that most fatalities occurred among people outdoors; those traveling on foot, in cars, or in boats. There were 94 reported casualties, with Hollywood and Miami Beach identified as the hardest-hit suburbs, reporting 34 and 13 deaths respectively. Coral Gables was described as experiencing comparatively less damage.
