Although face coverings are optional at City of Mesa facilities, we encourage visitors to continue to

One way this mythical view of prehistoric animals can be dispelled is by finding fossils of eggs, embryos or juveniles which show the animal was born and grew like any other animal.

This is Leopold, a Gila Monster that lives here at AZMNH in our Sonoran Desert Walk exhibit. You may encounter them in the Sonoran Desert here in Arizona, especially after a rain. If you do see one, leave it alone because they are venomous. They have glands in the lower jaw that release venom that is medically significant to humans. A sign of good health in Gila Monsters is a fat tail, which they use to store fat.
