MPA Winter Exhibitions Open this Thursday, December 7

Mark your calendars and join us this Thursday, December 7 from 7-9pm as we open our winter exhibitions, sponsored in part by the Young Family.

Emerson Gallery: Moving Beyond Beauty: Reverence and Reclamation

Atrium Gallery: To March is to Love: Weavings by Janel Leppin

December 7, 2023 – February 17, 2024
Opening Reception: December 7, 2023 7 – 9pm
Artist Talk: January 20, 2024, 1-3pm
Tea & Talk: February 8, 2024, 11am

Moving Beyond Beauty
This exhibit brings together five artists—Adjoa Jackson Burrowes, Jacqui Crocetta, Maggie Gourlay, June Linowitz, and Elzbieta Sikorska—who make work that is at once aesthetically pleasing and philosophically compelling. Visual attractiveness and the expression of deep and sometimes unsettling ideas live together, as each artist feels an urgency to address love, concern and reverence for the natural world. Beauty, created through skillful and inventive use of materials, becomes the doorway through which the viewer enters into a sincere dialogue about our fundamental need to experience and learn from nature and our ever more pressing responsibility to honor and care for it.

To March is to Love
Leppin’s whimsical and moving fiber art represents the dichotomy of a wondrous and fragile world, weaving textiles and used clothing to create unexpected textures and patterns. Her work mirrors the struggle between action and complacency, inviting us to engage with and contemplate our humanity.

Artist Sheila Crider is featured in the new issue of Home & Design magazine and just one example of the stellar Mid-Atlantic area artists we are proud to exhibit in our galleries. Learn more about her work and how her 2021-22 solo exhibition at MPA inspired new creative ideas.

“For inspiration, Crider brought along many items from her former DC studio. Among those bits and pieces were a stack of hanging file folders. After recycling their metal parts into 10-by-10-inch frames, she interwove colorful strips and scraps of traditional quilt batting onto them; she’d saved the fabric from the 2021-2022 exhibit “Intersectional Painting” at McLean Project for the Arts (MPA). Woven and stitched together, pieces in that sculpture series employed quilt batting as a metaphor for community. “It’s about how we interact with others and how we’re all intertwined,” she observes. While Crider was preparing those pieces, MPA artistic director Nancy Sausser commented that the canvases placed under the batting to absorb excess paint looked like ghost paintings.”

Exhibits like Crider’s are shared with our ArtReach community partners and FCPS Title I schoolchildren — just one example of how we strive to provide free arts education programming to ALL in our community.

You can help support our MPA exhibition and ArtReach programming with a gift tomorrow, November 28! Or make an early gift at https://mpaart.org/giving-tuesday-2023/

Brilliant colors blaze a trail across Sheila Crider’s dimensional art. In her mixed-media work, flat canvases may convert to billowing shapes. Textures glide from gridded burlap to subtle Japanese-paper relief. Parts may be woven or laced together. And while materials are often gathered from what....

Art Lovers and Collectors, You Don’t Want to Miss This...

Get Your Tickets for Our Collectors' Drawing!

These 60+ impressive MPA Alumni artists who have generously donated work for our Collectors Drawing have gained recognition at regional, national, and international levels. They've exhibited their work in solo and group shows, received reviews in art publications and national media, and many have taught at universities. Their art is part of public and private collections worldwide, including museums, academic institutions, healthcare facilities, embassies, and corporations.

Here's just one example of an artist whose work is available…Yuriko Yamaguchi (work pictured below) is a Japanese-born American contemporary sculptor and printmaker. Using more natural mediums, she creates abstract designs that are used to reflect deeper symbolistic ideas. When she moved to the United States at the age of 23, she barely spoke English and turned to art to express herself, exploring her identity as a “tiny being in a vast universe.”

Yamaguchi's art is in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. And through our Collectors Drawing, you have an opportunity to add a piece of her art to your own collection.

Don't miss this opportunity to support MPA and add to your art collection! See https://mpaart.org/collectors_drawing_2023/ to purchase your Collectors Drawing ticket and to see images of each of the available works of art.

And you can get a pre-event sneak peak of the art on Nov. 17, 2-4pm, by stopping into The Signet building at 6910 Fleetwood Road, McLean.

MPA to Host Inaugural MPA Inspires: A Weekend of Collecting and Connecting

Join McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) November 18 and 19 for MPA Inspires: A Weekend of Collecting and Connecting. This inaugural weekend-long celebration takes place at MPA Downtown, the organization’s hoped-for new supplemental space located in The Signet building at 6910 Fleetwood Road in McLean, VA. "We are thrilled this weekend will bring such a group of dynamic artists, each esteemed alumni of MPA's exhibition program, together with our warm and engaged community of supporters. We will come together to celebrate MPA's rich artistic legacy as well as our exciting plans to expand our presence within the vibrant DC arts community," said MPA Executive Director Lori Carbonneau. "This moment stands as one of the most remarkable milestones in MPA's 61-year history, and a celebration of our continued leadership in McLean and the wider regional arts scene."

MPA Inspires festivities kick off Saturday, November 18 from 2-5pm with Art Insights | Panel Discussion and Reception, presented by The Mather.
