The McGregor Museum was thrilled to host teacher, Elise Martins, this season!

MFL MarMac teachers Melissa Haberichter and Elise Martins spent time learning beyond the classroom this summer through STEM Teacher Externships. Their experiences with the City of McGregor and McGregor Historical Society will help create meaningful, real-world learning opportunities for our students.

Calling all McGregor school alumni! A new temporary exhibit is now on display at the McGregor Museum until the end of October! Photos, trophies, letterman jackets, marching band uniforms, sports memorabilia, class reunion scrapbooks, yearbooks, and more! Lots of hands on memorabilia for you to look through and relive those glory days once again! We even have partnered with the MFL MarMac School District who found some unsold yearbooks in a storage closet from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s & 2000’s that we will have for sale!
And next week we will be rolling out a limited edition Spartan Alumni and vintage Bulldog Alumni t-shirts & sweatshirts for you to order online-helping us to support the school’s student run & operated business the Bulldog Supply Company! Details will be coming…!

What once sorted mail to the residents of McGregor has now returned to its hometown! The McGregor post office mail sorter was used from 1927-1967 in the Diamond Jo building until the “new” post office was built. The new post office began servicing the public on August 30, 1967, and continues to do so today. Many of the old fixtures were sold off in the late 1960’s. According to Rose Mary Green, the generous donor who recently gifted the post office sorter to the McGregor Museum, Helen Anderson had bought the sorter in the 60’s and had it in her home through the 80’s at which point Rose Mary received the sorter. It was then transported to St. Louis where it has remained until now. Rose Mary felt strongly that it needed to return to its original home and reached out to the museum to make arrangements for its shipment back to Iowa. The McGregor Museum now has it proudly displayed in the front of the building. Stop by and check out this great piece of McGregor history!

MFL MarMac High School students Isla Henkes and Corbin Evanson are gaining valuable workforce experience and growing their interest in local history through summer positions at the McGregor Historical Museum. Staffing is supported by Iowa’s Workforce Development Work Experience Program (WEP), a grant-funded, work-based learning internship designed to prepare youth and adults ages 14 to 24 for high-demand careers.

McGregor Historical Society Board Secretary and MFL MarMac teacher Elise Martins proposed the partnership. “Working at the school, I learned about this opportunity with Iowa Workforce Development, where they will invest in high school students to help support area businesses and nonprofits, to help them create jobs for high school students, give them a leg up in the workforce and learn what is needed to be successful in the workforce. Iowa Workforce Development will also help offset the cost of the wages,” she explained. “I thought, ‘Gosh, this would really help the museum.’ We are a nonprofit agency and our budget is pretty limited. So this helps us with staffing and creates jobs for high school students. It’s a win-win all the way around.”

Calling all artists! Deadline is tomorrow!

🎨 What if your artwork became part of McGregor's story?

Andrew Clemens transformed simple grains of sand into extraordinary works of art that continue to captivate people more than 130 years later. Now, the City of McGregor is inviting an artist to help carry that legacy forward.

As part of McGregor's Creative Places Initiative, the City is seeking an artist to create an original hand-painted public art installation on the entrance columns of historic City Hall—one of our community's most recognizable civic landmarks. Rather than recreate one of Clemens' celebrated sand bottles, this project invites artists to capture the craftsmanship, natural beauty, and timeless character that made his work so extraordinary while creating a warm and memorable welcome for all who visit.

Public art has the power to tell a community's story, create memorable places, and invite people to slow down and look a little closer. This project is an opportunity to leave a lasting artistic legacy while helping celebrate one of McGregor's most treasured historical figures.

💰 Artist Commission: Up to $2,000
📅 Application Deadline: Friday, August 7
