Kentucky Gateway Museum Center

Kentucky Gateway Museum Center The oldest Kentucky state-chartered historical organization in continuous existence. Movie Stars. Artists. Pioneers. Slaves.

We have been collecting, preserving, and telling the story of Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley since March 1, 1878. Kentucky Gateway Museum Center: Three Historic Collections in One Dynamic Place

Explorers. Everyone who ever passed through this part of Kentucky or called it home left a story behind. Some are stories of courage and great achievement, others of love and everyday survival. The mo

re we explore those struggles and dreams, the more we understand our own. Now, by showcasing three dynamic collections in one place, the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center brings all the stories of the region into fascinating focus:

Our Genealogical and Historical Research Library, sheds light on the people and events of a seven-county area through an extensive collection of books, manuscripts and documents from colonial times. Our Regional History Museum illuminates the past through award-winning dioramas, more than 4,000 regional artifacts and a gallery of fine art related to the area. Our Kathleen Savage Browning Miniatures Collection looks at the world from a new perspective through mesmerizing, 1/12-scale reproductions of homes, furnishings, clothing, artwork and people. And our Changing Exhibits Gallery that has been host to award-winning traveling exhibits such as the "The World We Create", "Children Just Like Me", "The Cabaret Mechanical Theatre", "Brain Teasers", "Everybody Eats", "Herblock" and many others. Step outside the Center, and you'll discover that Maysville's stately architecture has more than a few great tales to tell, as does the pioneer graveyard located behind the Center. Before tomorrow becomes yesterday, we invite you to get the whole story at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center!

Welcome to the KYGMC team, Tara Machamer! 🎉

My journey with the museum began as a volunteer, so stepping into the role of Assistant Exhibits Curator feels especially meaningful. From the beginning, I was drawn to the museum’s mission and the stories it preserves, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute in a new way. I earned my degree in Public Health, where I developed skills in program development, grant writing, and community engagement that continue to serve me in supporting the museum’s goals. At the same time, I have always had a creative side and a passion for fashion, architecture, and spatial design, making this role a unique blend of my professional experience and personal interests. After spending the last ten years away, I returned to Maysville this past fall and have loved reconnecting with the community that helped shape me. Being back has deepened my appreciation for the history, people, and character that make this region special. I am excited to help create exhibits that inspire curiosity, spark conversation, and connect visitors to the stories of our past. Outside of the museum, you can usually find me enjoying the outdoors, spending time with family and friends, or saying yes to a new adventure. I feel fortunate to be part of this team and look forward to growing alongside the museum in the years ahead.

Stay cool this summer by sitting under the shade of your family tree… figuratively speaking. Just because school on summer break, doesn’t mean education has to be! A fun way to keep the mind working is by working on your family tree. Our Genealogical & Historical Research Library is the perf

It’s been an incredible few weeks wrapping up the school year for education! In partnership with Kentucky Humanities, we brought presentations about Colonel Charles Young to MCHS and hosted Dr. Pearlie M. Johnson at KYGMC for her presentation “Quilt Art: Examining the Narrative in Kentucky Quilts.”

We also helped prepare MCHS students with their own presentations. APUSH students spent time in our research library and have been working on learning more about specific historical figures from our region. To conclude, the APUSH class was assigned to present their findings to Straub Elementary students before wrapping up the school year.

Thank you Tandy for a wonderful month of educational opportunities! We’re looking forward to summer and more educational outreach in the future!

We’ll see you and Dr. Pearlie M. Johnson at 10:30 this morning in the research library!
