At first glance, it may simply look like a beautifully woven basket. But look a little closerโ€ฆ

This basket is one of the fascinating objects weโ€™ll explore during The Wolcott's in 10 Objects, a special tour presented in partnership with Ohio Open Doors.

Through ten carefully selected objects, weโ€™ll look beyond the rooms and furnishings of the Wolcott House to uncover the stories of the people who lived, worked, visited, and left their mark here.

๐Ÿงบ Come discover the story behind this basketโ€”and nine other objects that might just change the way you see the Wolcott House.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wolcott House is one of Maumee's most treasured landmarks and a cornerstone of the community's identity. Built in 1827 by James and Mary Wells Wolcott, the home has witnessed nearly two centuries of change while preserving the stories of the people, cultures, and events that shaped northwest Ohio. Its history reflects the intersection of frontier settlement, commerce along the Maumee River, Native American heritage, and the development of the Northwest Territory.

Today, as the centerpiece of the Wolcott Heritage Center and home of the Maumee Valley Historical Society, the Wolcott House continues to serve the community just as it has for generations. Thousands of visitors each year attend school programs, summer camps, festivals, tours, historical reenactments, community events, and special celebrations on the property. For many residents, memories of the Wolcott House begin in childhood and continue throughout their lives, making it one of the community's most meaningful gathering places.

As a Legacy 250 building, the Wolcott House represents more than history preserved. It is a living connection between past and present. Through its educational programs, community events, and preservation efforts, the house helps residents understand where they came from while strengthening the bonds that connect the Maumee community today. Nearly 200 years after it was built, the Wolcott House remains a place where history is shared, traditions are celebrated, and new memories are made.

Ohio's communities are filled special places like the Wolcott House. Do you have a community treasure you would like to submit for recognition in the 250 Buildings 250 Stories initiative? We would love to hear about it www.heritageohio.org/250-buildings-250-stories/
