Harding Presidential Sites

The Harding Presidential Sites consist of the private residence of Warren G. Harding, 29th President The Harding Home has been open as a museum since 1926.

The Harding Home, built in 1891, was the home to Warren and Florence Harding for 30 years. They moved from their Marion home to the White House when Harding was inaugurated as the 29th President of the United States in March 1921. The home is 95 percent original in content and the collection contains more than 5,000 items, making it a gem among house museums and presidential sites. The Harding Pre

sidential Library and Museum is the official repository of Harding artifacts and presidential documents. The Harding Presidential Library, completed in 2021, contains a main exhibit gallery, gift shop, and event space.

103 years ago today, President Warren G. Harding passed away in San Francisco, California. His death deeply shocked the nation, especially since he had appeared to be regaining strength after an illness that forced him to cut short his eight-week Voyage of Understanding through the western states, Canada, and Alaska. President Harding endured congestive heart failure and ultimately succumbed to a fatal heart attack. Medical records from his western trip show he suffered from high blood pressure, chest pains, respiratory discomfort, and indigestion. Sadly, because cardiac medicine was still in its infancy, these symptoms—so recognizable to us today—were not understood at the time as clear warning signs of a looming catastrophe.

Harding was known for his warmth and genuine connection with the American people. In just 29 months as president, he charted a new direction for the nation. He strengthened the economy and worked to reduce high unemployment. With a landmark speech in Birmingham, he brought the issue of race to the forefront of the national conversation. He established the Veterans Bureau to support disabled World War I veterans and created the Bureau of the Budget to modernize the federal budget process. Harding's optimism for America's future inspired those around him.

The America 250 Community Picnic scheduled for the Harding Presidential Sites today will go ahead as planned, despite the poor air quality in our area. We are moving as many activities as possible to indoor locations. If you have paid for a meal, you are welcome to eat on site or take it home.

The picnic is 4-8 p.m., and is free for all. A limited number of meals will be available for purchase when doors open at 4 p.m., or guests are welcome to bring their own meals.

The public is invited to attend the annual Presidential Wreathlaying Ceremony at the Harding Memorial on Saturday, July 18th. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Each year, similar ceremonies are held at the gravesites of all deceased presidents to honor their service to the nation. A brigadier general will represent the sitting president at the event. Additionally, Mrs. Harding will be acknowledged for her contributions to the country.

On this day, July 1, 1922, President Warren G. Harding and First Lady Florence Harding stopped in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. During their visit, they watched members of the United States Marine Corps reenact the famous Pickett’s Charge, with President Harding viewing the demonstration from the observation tower on Cemetery Ridge.

The Hardings spent the night at a Marine encampment appropriately named Camp Harding. The New York Times described their accommodations: “The President and Mrs. Harding are quartered at the camp at a temporary White House of canvas and wood. The structure is equipped with elaborately fitted sleeping rooms, baths, electric lights and even has a front porch.”
