Roanoke Island Maritime Museum The Roanoke Island Maritime Museum opened in 1998. The Museum is located in Manteo on the downtown waterfront in the George Washington Creef Boathouse.

Learn-to-Sail Program

The Outer Banks Community Sailing Program located at the boat shop on the Manteo Waterfront is an "on-the-water program" of the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum. The youth program started in 2000 to make the adventure of sailing available to youth in Dare County and visitors. All instruction is based on US Sailing guidelines. US Sailing is the governing body of the sport of sa

iling in the United Sates. Our coaches are experienced sailors and instructors and have years of sailing experience in various boats. Their experience includes racing at the college and club levels.

A Perfect Sailing Week and last day of the 2026 season - no rain days, afternoon wind under 15 mph, and the heat index was only in the upper 80's.

This is the last week of our 2026 season. The season would not be possible without our excellent instructors.

The 2027 schedule will be out in December....remember to sign up early.

12th Annual Kids Fishing Tournament

The Town of Manteo will host our 12th Annual Kids Fishing Tournament Saturday August 15, 2026.

The event will be at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum - 104 Fernando St. Manteo, NC 27954

This is a free family fun event open to kids 4 to 17 years old. Registration begins at 8:00am behind the museum. Each kid fishing will receive a t-shirt.

Lines-in will be at 8:15am. Fishing is allowed on the docks between the Gazebo and the Net Shed.

Lines-out at 10:00. A hotdog cookout will begin at 10:30 with awards to follow.

1st - 3rd place awards will be presented to the following age groups. 4 to 7, 8 to 11, and 12 to 17 years old. An award will also be given for the smallest and most unusual fish.

Another Rain Day

This week the sailors got two great days on the water. It was windy enough to test some just learned skills.

Yesterday, Thursday was an inside sailing activity day. The sailors made personal knot boards, had a mud puddle regatta with origami folded paper boats, played game to learn sailing terms, etc.

Notice of Race - 24th Annual Summer Regatta

Saturday, July 25, 2026.

The event is open to youth sailing Optimist and 420's. The first race will start at noon. The Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse deck will be the perfect spot to cheer on your sailor or just watch.

Happy 4th of July.

Todays forecast....Hot with a light breeze. This morning the Opti sailors are trying to make their way across Shallowbag Bay. The light westerly wind may not let them.

Overall a great week. Winds were perfect for sailing all week.

It's Friday afternoon the end of another week of sailing camp.

We had a morning Opti camp and a 420 camp for the afternoon session. The afternoon 420's got hit with some high winds, 20 to 25 mph, Monday and Tuesday. No sailing those days but got a lot of the classroom and safety instruction done. The winds cooperated the rest of the week for the 420 sailors.

Everyone had a great time made new friends and caught up with some friends they had not seen since last summer.

Twenty-Seven Years of Kids sailing in Manteo.

Our 2026 sailing season started this week. We had Opti sailors (8 to 11 years old) in the morning and afternoon camps. Lauren, Daniel, and Haley are back this summer as coaches.

The weather was great and the sailors got a lot of time on and in the water.

Boat Show Results

Saturday, October 25th -- the perfect day for the 13th Annual Town of Manteo Wooden Boat Show. A light north wind kept temps in the mid 60’s. The show was well attended and a lot of good boat discussions were had throughout the day. Over 150 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Award.

We had a first-time builder/exhibitor at the show. It was their first boat they had built and was so new it had just been varnished the night before. At around 4:00pm everyone gathered at the floating dock to christen the boat Electron and put it in the water for the first time.

Thanks to all of the museums volunteers that helped make a great event.
