We just began transcribing Leile Jones’s 1906 Diary and found some interesting information in the beginning pages including: the rates of postage in 1906, the largest cities in the U.S. from the 1900 census, weather signals, antidotes for poisons (obviously if you are poisoned, do not follow this advice), and a page for help in case of accidents.

This book is the memorial edition of Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great by Elbert Hubbard. This edition was prepared by the Roycrofters in East Aurora for Leile Jones of Oak Hill Cottage. Little Journeys to the Homes of the Great contained 14 volumes that were written in the 19th century. Elbert Hubbard, the author, was the founder of the Roycroft artisan community, which Leile Jones visited around the 1930s.

A copy of a photograph of the south view of Oak Hill Cottage that was kept by the Jones family. Dr. Jones and his family purchased Oak Hill in 1864. Their belongings (including clothing, photographs, and furniture) are still in the cottage and can be viewed any Sunday from 2pm-5pm on tours.

A copy of The Mansfield Herald from May 17th, 1888. This was Volume 38, Number 27. The Mansfield Herald was a vital source of news for Mansfield, Ohio that was established in 1818. This copy discussed the president renewing his veto privilege, a singer’s family, the hanging of Zeph Davis, and man killed at the infirmary.

On Saturday, September 19th, 2026, walk through Oak Hill Cottage, the iconic Gothic Revival home in Mansfield, without the hour or more commitment that our regular docent-led tours require. We’ll have the doors open from 9am till 2pm for free walk-throughs as part of Ohio Open Doors.

Volunteers will be helping throughout the cottage to answer questions. Visit the balcony attic room display that highlights the life of John Riley Robinson who built the house and went on to prominence as an adventurer, Mexican silver mine owner, and entrepreneur.

A photograph of the original Municipal Building in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1925. This building was located at the corner of Second and Walnut Streets. The Municipal Building was about 20 years old when the upper floor was remodeled to accommodate larger courtrooms. Local artist HR McBride painted a mural over the bench in Judge Lutz’s courtroom. Unfortunately, his work was destroyed, and a new Municipal Building was constructed.

Two photographs of Oak Hill Cottage taken on September 9th, 1984.
Oak Hill was built by John Riley Robinson, a railroad builder, mine engineer, and capitalist, in 1847 for his family. Dr. Jones bought the house in 1864, and his heirs owned it until 1965. All the furnishings and artifacts in the cottage belonged to the Jones family.
You can check out Oak Hill any Sunday from 2pm-5pm. $5 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.

A pamphlet kept by Leile Jones of Oak Hill Cottage from the Ohio Realty Company. This company was selling lots on Oak Hill for $350 upwards. These lots were located in the middle of the city, near the amazing Oak Hill Cottage owned by the Jones family, also known as the Jones Estate.
