Oak Hill Cottage Museum house in Mansfield, Ohio, Open April through Dec. Sundays, 2pm - 5pm, and by appointment operated by the Richland County Historical Society.

Two pages from The County of Richland, Ohio an Imperial Atlas and Art Folio in 1896. This atlas contained charts, statistical tables, and descriptions of surveys. It also included photographs of places in Mansfield, Ohio, including Shane’s Castle (Oak Hill Cottage), the Richland County Court House, High School, the County Children’s Home, and Mansfield churches.

This is a tin canister filled with Arter family reunion buttons and ribbons from 1910 to 1933. Each reunion took place at the Casino Park in Mansfield, Ohio. The Casino Park was the first casino in North Lake Park. It had swimming pools, walking areas, a roller coaster, a dance pavilion, a shooting gallery, and a merry-go-round. Unfortunately, it burned down in 1934.

A black and white photograph found in Leile Jones’s collection of photos! This photo shows the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers. This is the oldest public wood and glass conservatory in North America.
Although Leile Jones is not photographed here with these women, she likely also visited this place, given that she went to San Francisco’s Japanese Garden and brought and saved souvenirs from there.

A map of the Mansfield Area Fun Center of Ohio. These are the places that you should visit in the Mansfield area, including Oak Hill Cottage, also known as Shane’s Castle!

Oak Hill was built by John Riley Robinson, a railroad builder, mine engineer, and capitalist, in 1847 near a tree on a hill overlooking Mansfield. Dr. Jones and his family purchased the home in 1864. His heirs lived there until 1965. All the furnishings and artifacts that are still in the cottage belonged to the Jones family. You can check out Oak Hill on Sundays from 2pm-5pm on a guided tour!

Make sure to come to Oak Hill Cottage’s parlor on October 29th at 7pm to hear about Rose Knox (who used to be Rose Markward) from Rachel Greenfield! Rachel wrote a new book, published by Cornell University Press, titled: Rose Knox "How One Woman Mixed Kitchen and Boardroom to Remold an American Business." Rose Markward grew up in Mansfield in a wealthy family that fell victim to the Panic of 1873, an experience that shaped her later life as the widow of Charles Knox and the celebrated CEO of the company he had founded. Gelatine refreshments will be served in the parlor! This is a free event, but we do need reservations, so please email [email protected].
