Admission is free The Mansfield Historical Museum & Heritage Center is operated by the City of Mansfield. The Museum contains two floors of displays covering all aspects of life in early Mansfield and surrounding communities. There is an area dedicated to genealogical research, where patrons may work alone or with assistance from

the Museum staff. The Man House Museum is the home of one of Mansfield's founders and namesakes, Ralph S. The home was built between c.1865-1870. It underwent a largescale restoration in 2020 and opened as a museum in December 2020. Guided tours are available during the museum's operating hours.

As we recognize National V-J Day, we remember those Mansfield natives who served in the second World War.

After Japan sank the USS Houston in 1942, C.A. Back Jr., a Petty Officer 1st Class aboard the USS Houston, was captured and held in Japanese prison camps for three and a half years and was released upon Japan’s surrender in 1945.

For nearly two centuries, Mansfield has been home to dedicated medical professionals and a witness to remarkable advancements in healthcare. Among these historical innovations is this 1935 electrocardiograph, originally owned by Dr. Percy L. Cook, which recorded the heart's electrical activity over time. While modern electrocardiographs (EKGs) look vastly different today, they build upon the foundational technology of early devices like this one.

Join us for our History Talks lecture series at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Man House Museum, 604 W Broad St. To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, historian Bill Covington will give a presentation titled “Ethnicities in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.” The program will last approximately 30-45 minutes, with additional time reserved for audience questions.

The first Mansfield citizen to own an automobile was Mr. Charles Dunbell, who operated the cotton gin. The car was a Ford (likely a Model F), and it was very expensive, costing $1,025 in 1906, which is close to $38,000 today. Dunbell owned the Ford until his death in 1910, and Mansfield citizens were proud to have the novelty of a car, a rarity at the time, right here in town.

As Mansfield students begin to return to classes, let’s remember how things have changed inside the schools, from curriculum to equipment. One of the most important things to a classroom is the school desk, which has looked different to almost every generation of students. This example from the 1920s features cast iron legs and a wooden seat and writing surface, making it sturdy for the energetic students that learned on them.

Did you know that the Mansfield High School section of the Mansfield Mirror published its first issue of the School News in the Nov. 8, 1928 edition of the weekly newspaper? This inaugural issue highlighted the creativity of the student body, featuring original poetry written by the school's English IV class.
