Explore the beautiful 100 year old historic home, gallery, and history room or tour the expansive grounds hosting more than 70 different plant species; take a class or watch local artists blowing glass, silversmithing and printmaking; browse our gift shop featuring one-of-a kind artwork by Maui artists. Take a closer look at the artwork featured in Mālama Wao Akua 2026! 🌱

From misty mountain landscapes to native birds, plants, and insects, each piece offers a unique perspective on the natural world around us and the importance of caring for it.

Many of the artworks in the exhibition are available for purchase, making it a great opportunity to bring home a piece of Maui’s natural beauty while supporting local artists. Interested in a piece? You can purchase artwork in person at the Hui or call us for more information.

We’re excited to welcome Marlene Hirose to the Hui for Beginning Wheel Throwing!

Marlene is a multidisciplinary artist and educator with more than 20 years of experience in ceramics, sculpture, painting, and glass. She spent nearly two decades teaching wheel throwing and hand-building, helping students build their skills from the very beginning.

Her classes cover the fundamentals of working with clay, including wedging, throwing, trimming, and glazing. Whether you’re brand new to the wheel or ready to get back into the studio, Marlene will help you build confidence and explore the possibilities of clay.

Two new eight-week sessions begin SOON! Registration closes on Monday, 10/12.

• Wednesdays, beginning October 21
• Thursdays, beginning October 22

Think beyond the circle with visiting artist Jake Boggs! 🏺

Join us this weekend, October 10–11, for Altered States: Manipulating Thrown Forms, a two-day ceramics workshop at Hui Noʻeau.

Explore new ways to transform traditional wheel-thrown pottery into dynamic sculptural forms using techniques like paddling, reshaping, altering rims, and adding texture. With demonstrations and individual guidance from Jake Boggs, you’ll experiment with new approaches and push your wheel-throwing practice in unexpected directions.

Ready to get into printmaking? Whether you're brand new to the medium or looking to brush up on your skills, Printmaking 101 is a great place to start.

Over six weeks with instructor Tia Brady, you'll explore the fundamentals of printmaking while choosing the processes that interest you most. Try your hand at relief and reduction printing, monotypes, Gelli plates, collagraphs, screen printing, drypoint, copper etching, solar plates, chine collé, and more. You can even explore different ways to print on fabric.

🌿 Learning, creating, and connecting with our island home

This year, the Hui’s field trips are taking students' imagination beyond the studio and into the natural world as part of Year of Our Coastal Kuleana.

Through our new partnership with Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, students are learning about the wildlife and habitats that make Maui’s coastal ecosystems so special, then bringing those lessons back to the studio to create art inspired by the Refuge.

Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Services Program Manager Allyssa Morris joined us for one of these special field trips and shared:

“I love that students were able to learn about Keālia Pond NWR and later make beautiful art inspired by the Refuge. Being surrounded with students creating art is very special and I enjoyed watching each student work so diligently! My hope is that students will bring their families to visit the Refuge and feel a deeper connection to the place.”

We love seeing that connection happen: learning about a place, creating in response to it, and hopefully carrying that sense of curiosity and mālama with them. 🌺

Year of Our Coastal Kuleana is a year-long focus on caring for and connecting with our coastal environments, and we’re excited to bring these experiences to Maui students through art and education.

Looking for something new to make this fall? 🎨

There are plenty of ways to get creative at the Hui this October and November, with adult classes in printmaking, metalsmithing, drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, fiber arts, and more.

Coming up this month, try your hand at Cyanotype Silk Twill Scarves, learn the traditional techniques of Chasing & Repoussé, join the Drawing & Illustration Club, or spend a weekend exploring pastels. We also have Printmaking 101, ceramics, painting, jewelry, photography, Art with Aloha, and more happening throughout the fall.

Have you made it up to the Hui to see Mālama Wao Akua yet?

Now in its 22nd year, Mālama Wao Akua: Caring for the Realm of the Gods is a juried exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui. Presented by Hui No‘eau in collaboration with@eastmauiwp the exhibition brings together artwork inspired by the plants, animals, landscapes, and watersheds that make up our island home. ❤

The show is an opportunity to slow down and spend some time with the artwork while learning more about the native species found across Maui Nui. From paintings and photography to sculpture, fiber, ceramics, and other mediums, the exhibition offers many different ways for artists to explore and share the importance of protecting our native species.

If you haven’t seen the show yet, come by before it closes on November 6. And while you’re here, take a walk around the Kaluanui grounds, visit the Gallery Shop, and enjoy some time in Upcountry.

Have a body of work you’ve been developing? Ready to bring it together for a gallery exhibition?

Hui No‘eau is now accepting proposals for our 2028 Solo Artist Exhibition!

This is an opportunity for Hawai‘i artists working in all media to present a cohesive body of work in a professional gallery setting. Selected artists will also have opportunities to connect with the community through artist walkthroughs, workshops, talks, and more.

• Exhibition: March 17–May 5, 2028
• Application deadline: Sunday, November 15, 2026 at 4 PM
• All media welcome
• Open to Hawai‘i artists age 18+

Your proposal should include 10–15 images of your work, a resume, and an artist statement outlining your proposed body of work and concept.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the community back to the Hui for a morning of art, conservation, and connection.

Join us for Mālama Wao Akua Community Day + Native Plant Sale, featuring an intimate Talk Story with artist and conservationist Zach Pezzillo, a selection of native plants for your home garden, and hands-on art projects for both keiki and adults.

Following our recent weather closure, we’re excited to gather together again and continue celebrating the plants, places, and species that make Maui Nui special.

Come spend the morning at the Hui, learn something new, get creative, and take home a native plant or two!
