Museum of Early Trades & Crafts

Museum of Early Trades & Crafts To inspire a connection to NJ history, culture, trades, and crafts.

Housed in a 1900 Richardsonian-Romanesque Revival building listed on the National Register of Historic places, the Museum explores 18th- and 19th-century American history, with a focus on New Jersey. Drawing on its collection of over 8,000 hand tools and their products, METC uses material culture to interpret the lives and technologies of people who lived and worked before the rise of large-scale

industrialization in this country. The Museum offers visitors of all ages a broad range of changing exhibits, and related programs that address many facets of early American history, craftsmanship, and the diversity of trades performed by men and women.

A few behind the scenes photos of the movie magic that went on last week!

We are so grateful to be a scene in an upcoming movie that transformed our local history museum into a small French textile and quilt museum. (Which is not such a stretch, with our intricately stenciled walls, Gothic arches, and elegant ironwork throughout.)

As the last pieces of the set were removed, and our museum returned to normal this week, there is both a sense of regret in saying goodbye to the crew, the actors, and the excitement of being even a small part of this film, but also a relief to get back to work we do as an educational history museum.

Please note: The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts and the METC Education Annex will be closed from Sunday August 2, through Monday August 10. There will be no Workspace Wednesday on August 5.

METC will re-open on Tuesday, August 11, and Workspace Wednesday will be held on Wednesday, August 12.
