Classic cars take center stage in Madison Heights on Saturday, September 19, as the HREC’s Rev'N in the Heights Community Event & Car Show revs up the fun at Civic Center Plaza. The Heritage Rooms, our city’s historical museum, will also be open that day for a special Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Take a ride through Madison Heights history by exploring displays, artifacts and vintage photographs showcasing the story of our community dating back to the early 1900s. We invite you to cruise into the museum for some classic Madison Heights history before enjoying all the classic cars at Rev'N in the Heights!

Before the City of Madison Heights was incorporated in 1955, public works in Royal Oak Township consisted of just one man and one truck. A year after incorporation, the new city’s Department of Public Works had a seven-person staff, three trucks, a front-end loader and a road grader to meet the growing city’s demands. Here’s a photo from our archives of two students, Roy Gunsh and Ron Thomas, standing in front of the original Madison High School on John R, circa the mid-1940s. We’ve posted this photo before, but wanted to share it again with school starting on Monday. Frances Koss, daughter of Leo Koss and Anna Mudloff Koss, rides her horse at the Koss family farm, located at 1141 East 11 Mile Road (at the corner of Hales Street). The farm would later become the site of Koss, Vandenberg, Schoenhals and Madison Elementary Schools. Photo taken in 1942.

Enclosure of Red Run was begun in 1961. This photo shows progress on the multi-million-dollar infrastructure project, circa the early to mid-1960s. Once a meandering creek that snaked through our city, Red Run had become a primary drain that serviced a 37-square-mile area.

A Madison Heights restaurant will be in the national television spotlight tonight, but before Boodles was there, 935 W. Eleven Mile Road was home to another iconic local restaurant. We don’t think Chef Gordon Ramsay ever visited, but who remembers going to Melio’s back in the day for pizza and other Italian fare?
