The first school in what is now the Lamphere District was started in 1834. The Lamphere School District was officially organized on June 13, 1844, and was named for Archibald Lamphere, whose children attended the school. The first teacher was Miss Fidelia Tillottson, whose salary was $1 a month, in addition to room and board provided by various members of the community. Yearly tuition for students was half a cord of wood.

The purpose of the Madison Heights Historical Commission is to collect and preserve historical materials relating to the history of the City of Madison Heights and the surrounding area. We hold quarterly Open Houses at the Margene & Jack Scott Heritage Rooms historical museum, located on the lower level of City Hall. Here on our page, we share vintage photos, local stories and historical items of interest as a way to celebrate and preserve Madison Heights’ past. The City of Madison Heights Community Center, 28003 John R, 1963. The 4,776 sq. ft. building, at the northwest corner of John R and Gardenia Ave., was built in 1953 and is still in use today. It recently housed a pet grooming business.

Did you know? Prior to the 1920s, the area now known as Madison Heights was predominantly farmland. Roads, for the most part, were rutted trails etched through the sprawling countryside by farmers with their wagons. The main artery of travel was John R, an oiled gravel road named after John R. Williams, who took office as the first mayor of Detroit in 1824.
