National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame inductee -Jane “ Peaches” Bartkowicz was the pride of Hamtramck and a pioneer of professional women’s tennis.
You are invited to come and hear Peaches along with other tennis luminaries talk about their experiences at Hamtramck Tennis: Then and Now sponsored by the Hamtramck Historical Museum. September 19, 2026 – 1:00 pm. Admission is FREE.

Aug. 27, 1948, in a twin bill Philadelphia Athletics 3rd baseman, Hank Majeski, hit six doubles (and a single). Majeski also scored three runs and had four RBI’s while giving new meaning to the term ‘Double Header.’

Born on this day NPASHF Inductee Duane Bobick, a championship fighter. His first professional bout was April 10, 1973, in Minneapolis, Minnesota when he knocked out Tommy "Side" Burns at 2:59 of the first round. Bobick posted a career pro record of 48 wins and 4 losses with 42 knockouts. He retired in 1979 and was a 2014 inductee into the NPASHF. Read more at https://bit.ly/2JDFsKo

Happy Birthday Christian Laettner. Christian led the Duke University basketball team to two consecutive NCAA Championships in 1991 and 1992. He is best remembered for his ‘buzzer beater’ against the Kentucky Wildcats in the 1992 regionals. Christian was inducted into the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. He is a member of the USA Hockey Hall of Fame and the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame and currently serves as a color commentator for televised NHL games. Happy Birthday, Frank Brickowski, born on this date in 1959 in Bayville, NY. The 6’ 9” basketball forward played 4 years at Penn State, followed by 3 years of pro basketball overseas. His NBA career began in 1983 and lasted 12 years, during which he played for six teams and averaged 10 points per game.

August 13 – Born this day in Reading PA, golfer Betsy King became a member of the LPGA in 1977 and won six major championships and 34 LPGA Tour events in all. With her 30th win in 1995, she gained entry into the World Golf Hall of Fame. She played for the United States in the Solheim Cup five times (1990, ‘92, ‘94, ‘96, ‘98) and was the captain of the 2007 United States team. She was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Read more about Betsy at:

Born on August 9, 1946, Art “Pinky” Deras was the pride and joy of Hamtramck, MI, Deras and a star member of the 1959 Little League and 1961 Pony League World Series winning Hamtramck team. Five years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization ended with an enlistment in the US Army, followed by a full career as an officer in the Warren, Michigan Police Department. Sadly, Pinky left us on June 5, 2022, at the age of 75.
