Join us Friday, October 2nd as we welcome Gong Slayer!

Gong Slayer is the project of Drew Gowran, a drummer and percussionist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He comes from a free jazz/improv background, but this project is inspired by the work of percussionist/composer Tatsuya Nakatani and is an exercise in ritual drone and “sound healing”.

Join us Saturday, September 26th as we welcome Lisa Cameron and Emily Beisel! It’s going to be an incredible show!

Lisa Cameron is a drummer, percussionist, and sound artist whose work has enriched Austin’s experimental music landscape for decades. Through amplified and acoustic percussion, she unearths frequencies already present in rooms and coaxes them into oscillating overtones, transforming these resonances into raw material for improvisation. Her practice continually evolves, recently turning toward building instruments from scratch and discovering what they can do.
Cameron balances focused listening with unrestrained exploration. She experiments with vibrational surfaces and extended percussion techniques, creating immersive sonic environments that channel an ancient spirit, fusing it with a contemporary approach. Her performances generate unexpected harmonics and complex overtonal relationships, whether working solo as Venison Whirled or collaborating with improvisers drawn to her singular methodology.

Emily Rach Beisel is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, educator, curator and woodwind specialist. Beisel is known for visceral performances blending extended vocal and instrumental techniques with analogue electronics. Their work is described as “heavy stuff, sounds retrieved from the deeper places… Beisel pokes around in the sonic depths and brings leviathans out to play. (A Jazz Noise)” As a curator, Beisel seeks to increase the visibility and involvement of femme, trans and nonbinary artists in the creative performance community. They founded the Pleiades Series at Elastic Arts, presenting monthly performances, community-based free improvisation sessions and a biennial PleiadesFest.

Exhibition Title:
BOOM AND DUST
Jason Reed and Barry Stone

Artist Statement:
BOOM AND DUST is a 58-foot accordion-fold photobook depicting a 40-mile stretch of highway between Midland and Odessa. Inspired by Ed Ruscha, Reed and Stone made hundreds of photographs from the back of a pickup truck of this roadway, which serves as the backbone of the oil industry known as the “Petroplex.” The exhibition features large-scale photographs, video, a radio transmitted soundscape, and the unfurling of the full length of the book. Together, these works form a dense scroll of mancamps, pumpjacks, and oil outfitters, conjuring the unrelenting industrial landscape situated in the Permian Basin, the most productive oil field in the world.

The visual works are accompanied by a soundscape of acoustic guitar improvisations made in the former company town of Texon in the shadow of the Santa Rita no.1 and layered with field recordings of gas flares, produced water lakes, and lap steel, which accompany the video and can be accessed via the CO-OPt hyper-local radio station, FM 89.9.

A limited number of books and soundtrack cassettes have been set aside for this exhibition and will be available during the closing reception and performance.
