The 3-Pence Washer That Saved the Spitfire in WWII
During the Battle of Britain, Spitfire pilots faced a dangerous problem. Pushing the aircraft into a sudden dive could cause the engine to choke, leaving pilots vulnerable in combat.

The issue wasn't the angle of the aircraft—it was negative G-forces flooding the engine with fuel. While engineers struggled to redesign the carburetor, engineer Beatrice Shilling created a surprisingly simple solution: a small brass washer costing just three pence.

Russian Special Forces' 675-Round Ammo Backpack | The Shershni Ammunition System
What if a single soldier could carry enough ammunition to keep firing almost continuously?

The Shershni ammunition system, used by Russian special forces, transforms a standard backpack into a mobile ammunition supply. Hidden inside the camouflage pack is a metal ammunition box capable of holding 675 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition—around six times more than a conventional ammo container.

Weighing nearly 31 kilograms when fully loaded, the system uses reinforced shoulder straps and a load-bearing waist belt to distribute the weight. In combat, it dramatically reduces reload frequency, allowing sustained suppressive fire for extended periods.

But this extra firepower comes with a cost. The complex ammunition feed system introduces additional failure points, and damage to the pack or ammunition belt can severely impact combat effectiveness.
