Andy Warhol & Pug

The pug belonged to Brigid Berlin, Warhol’s close friend and a staple of the Factory. Berlin had two pugs, identified in The Andy Warhol Diaries as Fame and Fortune, who became regulars in Warhol’s world.

The pugs appeared in photographs with Warhol and, apparently, had their own artistic vision. In one diary entry from Tuesday, August 14, 1984, Warhol records:

“Brigid’s pug walked across the painting I’d just done. He had orange and purple feet.”

Warhol always seemed to have a soft spot for animals. Fame and Fortune were no exception, orange and purple feet and all.

Andy Warhol’s Cookie Jar Collection

Warhol amassed 175 ceramic cookie jars, often discovered during weekend trips to New York flea markets and shops.

Following Warhol’s death in 1987, Sotheby’s opened this private world to the public. Over ten days in 1988, Sotheby’s auctioned off thousands of objects from Warhol’s estate.

Among the valuable art and antiques were his cookie jars.
The collection had been expected to bring around $7,000. Instead, the jars sold for $247,830.

Another example of Warhol’s lifelong love of collecting, design, and all things kitsch.

38 years ago today, Jean-Michel Basquiat died at just 27 years old.

In less than a decade, Basquiat transformed contemporary art, fusing graffiti, poetry, music, and painting into a bold visual language that challenged history, race, power, and identity.

His collaboration with Andy Warhol became one of the defining artistic partnerships of the 1980s.
After meeting in 1982, the two quickly became close friends, developing a creative dialogue that combined Warhol’s bold commercial imagery with Basquiat’s expressive brushwork, handwritten text, symbols, and raw painterly energy.

When their joint exhibition opened at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1985, critics were sharply divided. One infamous New York Times review dismissed Basquiat as Warhol’s “mascot,” reducing their partnership to a publicity stunt.

Warhol was deeply affected. In The Andy Warhol Diaries, he wrote on Thursday, September 19, 1985:

“…I asked for the paper, and there in Friday’s Times I saw a big headline: ‘Basquiat and Warhol in Pas de Deux.’ And I just read one line—that Jean Michel was my ‘mascot.’ Oh God.”

Yet months earlier, on Thursday, May 9, 1985, he had privately written:

“…his [Basquiat’s] work is wonderful, it’s so exciting, and I think he will last.”
History proved him right.

Today, nearly four decades after Basquiat’s death, their collaborations are celebrated not as an experiment, but as one of the defining artistic dialogues of the 1980s.
