Join us this Wednesday, September 2nd at noon at Underpass Park in Livingston for a statue dedication ceremony for local legend, Warren McGee. The ceremony will include tributes from the partners who brought this monument to fruition as well as light refreshments inside the Depot Museum.

Over his remarkable 102-year life, Warren McGee left a lasting mark on Livingston and Park County. A master photographer and engineer, he documented decades of Northern Pacific Railroad history while championing many of the places and stories that helped define the local community.

Warren's legacy will be honored with a life-size bronze statue in Underpass Park thanks to a generous gift from The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation and in partnership with the The Livingston Depot Center Foundation, the Park County Community Foundation, the City of Livingston, Montana, and the Livingston Downtown Building Owner and Business Association.

A statue of Warren McGee will be dedicated at a public ceremony on Sept. 2 in downtown Livingston.

McGee, who died in 2017, began preserving railroad history through photography in the 1930s, and his work was featured in several books. He worked in the rail industry and had been fascinated by trains from the age of four.

"Over his remarkable 102-year life, Warren McGee left a lasting mark on Livingston and Park County," reads a statement from the Livingston Depot Center. "A master photographer and engineer, he documented decades of Northern Pacific Railroad history while championing many of the places and stories that helped define the local community."
McGee was awarded the South Central Montana Heritage Pioneer Railroad Award Railroad Hall of Fame in 2008 and received other accolades during his life.

As a retiree, McGee spent time telling train stories as a guest for various groups and served on a parks board where he helped restore Sacajawea Park. He was said to have been involved in the planting and watering of more than 196 trees, revitalizing the lagoon and stream area, and building the park’s waterfowl population.

"He was instrumental in preserving Sacagawea Park and establishing the Yellowstone Gateway Museum," reads the depot center's statement. "He even helped save the Livingston Depot and stop the proposed dam that would have flooded Paradise Valley. Thanks to a generous gift from the Washington Foundation and a partnership among the Livingston Depot Foundation, the Park County Community Foundation, the City of Livingston, and the Livingston Downtown Building Owners & Business Association, Warren's legacy will soon be honored with a life-size bronze statue in Underpass Park."

The statue of McGee will be dedicated during an event from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at the corner of Park and Main streets.

The statue's creator is Mary Michael, who made the Sacagawea and Pomp sculpture near the Livingston Civic Center.

"Warren McGee had a gift for bringing people together to accomplish extraordinary things, and this statue is just the beginning," reads the center's statement. "It represents new partnerships, a revitalized Underpass Park and pedestrian corridor, a more beautiful downtown, and a stronger community—continuing the collaborative spirit that defined Warren's life."
