"Stonewall" Jackson ever owned and discover what life was like in Lexington, VA in the years leading up to the Civil War. Take the time to curate your own experience with the self-guided tour option or ask the docent questions while you tour the house. Groups of 15 or more should be booked 3-5 business days ahead of time by calling the main line.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!!!

Can you believe our country is celebrating 250 years?? As festivities kick into gear for this summer, it is fascinating look back at our beginnings.

Did you know? Thomas Jackson’s great-grandfather, John Jackson, an Irish native who came to America aboard a prison ship to complete his indentured servitude, on the ship he met Elizabeth Cummins and the pair would later get married.

After serving their indenture, the couple was instrumental in helping during the American Revolution. John and their two sons enlisted in the Continental Army. His wife, Elizabeth, turned the home into a refuge for those affected by Native American attacks and was known to be an excellent marksman with musket fire.

Saturday, June 6th was the annual commemoration of Hetty here in Lexington. Hetty was an esnalved person who lived in the Jackson home upon Mary Anna's marriage to Major Jackson.

Her story is one of resiliance. Born into slavery and acting as a caregiver to Mary Anna during Anna's childhood, Hetty and her two teenage sons moved from North Carolina with Mary Anna and to Lexington in 1857.

Hetty lived long enough to not only achieve her freedom following the Civil War, but she also lived long enough to see automobiles and the Wright Brothers first flight before passing away in 1911.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!!!

We have a special collection's highlight for today showcasing the wedding dress of Julia Jackson Christian, Thomas' Jackson's daughter.

Julia was born during the Civil War and only saw her father twice, as a small infant, before he passed away following the Battle of Chancellorsville. She wore this wedding dress on June 2nd, 1885 upon her marriage to Williams Edmund Christian when she was 23 years old.

Our first Story Hour kick off was a success!! We are so excited to take part in the telling of America's story through 250 years.

Every Tuesday through June, Stonewall Jackson House will be offering a children's "America's 250th Story Hour," with a different topic each week. The series is geared toward children 10 and younger; parents must remain on site.

🗺️ June 2: First Beginnings - Jamestown - the lives, challenges, and hopes of early settlers

💪 June 9: Fight for Independence - Revolutionary War - the voices, courage, and turning points that shaped America's fight for independence

📜 June 16: Founding Fathers - the Founding Fathers and Mothers of America's earliest days

🪓 June 23: The Frontier - early explorers and pioneers push westward into new lands and possibilities

⛓️‍💥 June 30: Following Freedom - the Underground Railroad and the brave paths taken toward liberty and hope

Happy Fun Fact Friday!!!

Did you know? From 1907-1954 the home of Thomas Jackson was turned into the local community hospital! Following Jackson's death, his wife, Mary Anna kept the home in her ownership before selling it to the Mary Lee Custis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

The UDC decided to transform the site into a hospital, making several additions before their opening in 1907. The hopsital served the community for many years and there are even many around today who were born in the house!
