"Stonewall" Jackson ever owned and discover what life was like in Lexington, VA in the years leading up to the Civil War. Take the time to curate your own experience with the self-guided tour option or ask the docent questions while you tour the house. Groups of 15 or more should be booked 3-5 business days ahead of time by calling the main line.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!!

This cookbook we have on display in our exhibit gallery is the book Mary Anna owned and recorded recipes in, which she collected from different people. The book is filled with written recipes, newspaper clippings and even a recipe for buckwheat cakes given to Mary Anna by the enslaved cook, Amy.

Mary Anna commented on Amy's incredible cooking skills and her delicious dishes she would prepare for the Jacksons. Try to recreate her buckwheat recipe on your own!!

One quart of buckwheat flour, ½ pint of meal, & ½ pint of flour – About 4 teaspoonsful of yeast, & one of salt. Mix with warm water, & Set to rise. If you want the cakes for supper, make the batter three hours before hand, or longer – When it has risen high, or if covered with bubbles, it is ready to cook – If for breakfast make up the night before – If you find the batter sour in the morning, mix into it a little soda.
If the buckwheat is light, you may omit the half pint of flour.

More pictures from our lovely historic garden courtesy of the Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners Association and their plentiful harvest last week!!

Their hard work produced 2 lbs of cantelopue, 1.4 lbs of squash, 15 herb cups (dill, rosemary, basil, and parsely) and 6 lavendar bouquets delivered to the Rockbridge Area Relief Association.

Thank you so much to the Master Gardeners for their amazing work!!

Happy Fun Fact Friday and welcome back Cadets!!

Today marks the return of the Corp of Cadets and the start of a new semester at VMI. Jackson himself would be settling in to prepare another year of teaching classes at VMI around this time as well.

Professor Jackson taught Natural and Experimental Philosophy at VMI, which is now classified as physics. However, in the 1850s, physics was not a proven science and remained in the theoretical philosophy catagory. Alongside this, Jackson also taught artillery, a class he was much more suited in given his artillery experience as a soldier during the Mexican-American War.

Take a look at today's garden harvest!!

The Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners Association pulled some beautiful basil, dill and rosemary from our historic garden this morning as well as five cantelopes along with cucumbers and tomatoes! These lovely crops were donated to the Rockbridge Area Relief Association food bank for the local community to enjoy!

A huge thank you to Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners Association for their amazing work at making the Jackson House garden look amazing and for their work in giving back to the community through what they grow here.

We are loving World Photography Day!! Photos not only inform us of the lifespan for the Jackson House, but also the progression of life for Jackson himself!

Photographs from every major life change can tell us a lot about Jackson's experiences and what was happening around him. The first photo pictured is an early image of Jackson as a young man in his early 20s, eager for combat in the Mexican-American War.

Then, the next time we see Jackson in photographs is his time here in Lexington as a professor at VMI, wearing his professors uniform! Finally, perhaps the most well-known images of Jackson from the Civil War were taken when he was in his 30s ultimately before his death.

Today is World Photography Day and as a historic site, photographs are such an important part of our history!

The Jackson House is much older than photography, the brick portion being built in 1801, but once we hit the 1900s, photos of the Jackson House began surfacing. Through photography, we can track the evolution of the home post-Jackson and it's timeline to a museum.

After the Civil War, the home fell into disrepair until being converted into the community hospital from 1907-1954 and is now the Jackson House Museum that we know it to be today!
