When I first started photographing owls, I tended to think of them as slower, lumbering birds. But over the years, getting to know different species has proven the opposite, many owls, especially the smaller ones, are incredibly fast.

This pygmy owl sat at the top of this pine tree for a few minutes, then in a flash launched itself toward another perch. I feel lucky to have caught him in the transition because he was up and gone almost instantly.

Photographing owls on the cusp of night forces you into less than ideal camera settings. This photo was taken with very little daylight left, and when you drop the shutter to compensate, you sometimes get lucky. The slower speed turns the owl’s flight into a beautiful blur of motion.

Another from my barn owl collection. This one was just flying by at about 13 meters (43 feet). Barn owls are particularly hard to photograph since they’re mostly nocturnal and don’t start their activities until most of the good shooting light is gone. But every now and then they slip out into the open and are just lit enough for a good shot or two. This was one of those moments.

Cinnamon colored black bears are one of my favorites. Black bears live all across North America, but the color phase bears like cinnamon, brown, and blond are far more common in the West. As you move east, the lighter colors fade until most bears are truly black. It is a west to east gradient, with the great plains marking the big shift toward these beautiful color phases.

One of the most elusive animals I’ve photographed... the American marten. The other night I had an amazing experience with a young great horned owl who decided I was no threat and he had bigger things to focus on.

He flew up as I drove by, then just… stayed. I moved my pickup a couple times for different framing, and he couldn’t have cared less. He was keeping watch on on the flurry of birds around and the hunt ahead.

It’s rare for me to have one sit out in the open like this. Calm, unbothered, and willing to share a moment. I’ll take the gift.
