The bridge fundamentally symbolizes transition, connection, and the overcoming perils of life. Only the righteous or heroic, such as the butterfly base jumpers can cross the bridge. The bridge represents a link and passage between two distinct realms, states of being, or levels of consciousness. Crossing a bridge represents a point of no return or a major spiritual shift.

The caterpillar represents the unformed stage of existence, nascent potential, and the slow, preparatory work of becoming. While the butterfly symbolizes the liberated soul or final transformation, the caterpillar embodies the earthly foundation required to reach that state. We see the “base jumpers” getting ready for their leap of faith in an attempt to reach a different state of consciousness as the butterfly sails riding the ship to another realm on the “voyage of the soul”.

In Japan, the image of a butterfly has inspired the artists for hundreds of years. It is always associated with the best moments in life. Here, traditional celebrations and marches begin with “the dance of the butterfly.” Butterflies also accompany wedding ceremonies in Japan. But not all know that butterflies are the amazing and courageous travelers. In favorable winds Monarch butterflies from North America can cross the Atlantic to reach England, resting as needed on the decks of ships.

In ancient Indian tradition, the spider fashions a web from himself to produce the main component of the universe. It extends threads between the sky and earth, which act as the connection between the cosmos and the earth. This brilliant guess was confirmed by modern scientific theories describing the structure of the universe as the web of cosmic strings. The universal model of the web appears also in the structure of the Internet. The stream of information- the “spider’s silk” - traveling through cosmic satellites reaches the most secluded corners of the world. The World Wide Web contains the intellectual achievements of the world. It can be graphically depicted as a huge brain or a heavenly web that hangs over the world. The spider seen in the picture carries a world time clock on its belly. A notable detail from the world of spiders: the abdomens of black widow spiders carry a coloration that resembles an hourglass.

The role of the fish in the world’s creation was both active and passive in ancient myth. In the active version, a fish brings silt from the floor of the primeval ocean and creates land with it. The passive version has fish supporting the land, thus any sharp movement of the fish results in earthquakes.

In China and India the fish symbolizes rebirth. The fish is also a metaphor for Jesus Christ. In fact, the genus name for fish, ichthus is deciphered as the abbreviation of the Greek formula, Jesous Christos Theou Huios Soter. AS well, two of the Apostles Peter and Andrew were originally fishermen. Christ promises to make them “fishers of Men”. From this comes the allegorical sense of catching fish, or human souls, with a net as depicted in medieval art. How many souls have been caught in these nets since then? Man, inspired by his Creator, imitates this most artful and original creation.

In Polynesian mythology there is a wonderful legend about a strong man named Maui who possesses magical knowledge. He captures the sun into a specially fashioned trap making it shine longer and increasing the length of the day. He calms the winds, raises the sky that rested upon the earth in the beginning and- with the help of a specialized fishing hook- he lures a fish-island from the depths of the ocean floor.

People inhabit this island—Maui. Maui brings them fire, as did Prometheus, which helps them to prepare food. Like Prometheus, he battles other gods in an effort to give his people immortality. Famous songs about Maui are part of ritual dances and games of Polynesian natives.

The definitive Renaissance image of an armored rhino is Albrecht Dürer's 1515 woodcut, known as "Rhinocerus". This image was widely circulated and shaped European perceptions of the animal for centuries, frequently copied by other artists of the same era.

The rhinoceros represents a potent mixture of brute strength, short-sighted passion, and material-oriented focus. It is often linked to the elements of water and earth, embodying a stubborn, unrefined power. It is frequently grouped with armored or rare animals in symbolic, artistic contexts.

In China, the rhinoceros's horn is valued and believed to be the source of virility, hence the rhinos in Africa were hunted for decades. In the painting the armored creature symbolizes the powerful war machine under attack moving forward despite the “shrub like” explosions.

Ancient Greeks are known to have destroyed the city of Troy by using a fatal gift - a hollow wooden horse in which a group of warriors had concealed themselves. The artist vividly conveys the idea of the destructive gift, creating the image of mighty rhinoceros - an embodiment of wild force. The beast appears before us as killing rhinomachine clad in armor, being forged by Greek armorers on a secret range. The flaming fire of forges is raging inside the monster, splashing out into the night from his eyes and nostrils. At the same time, vast expanse of savanna reminds us of more peaceful, gigantic rhinoceroses that had been grazing there in prehistoric times alongside the mastodons - elephant-like creatures with four tusks, and many other amazing animals.

There are legends that the human race appeared from creatures resembling amphibians, covered with scales and breathing through gills. The underwater world is hidden from sight by layers of water. That is why water is associated with the subconscious. Knowledge is inaccessible (according to Freud) within the depths, but accessible to the fish!

Jesus Christ made an analogy between fishing and turning people to the new faith. This is where the tradition of baptizing with water came from. Hence, the Pope wears the Ring of the Fisherman. Three fish in a group are a symbol of the Christian holiday - Trinity. Obviously, this triad is announcing the toast for “fertility and reproduction”, and of course, a clean environment.

The sun rises and sets for millions of years; the ocean rolls its green waves toward the shores of the earth and the sky shines with blueness- but only with the arrival of Man was this beauty recognized. The mythical –poetical background of the painting is the birth of the world, where the division of the elements- sky, earth, and water took place.

In the foreground, people-snails associate with the actors of a giant theatrical performance, the final steps in forming the world. Their yearning for the water is reminiscent of the difficult and dangerous journey turtles must make to reach the protective waters of the ocean. It can symbolize Man’s intuitive longing for freedom and, in addition, longing for the discovery of beauty and unity of the world by way of observation and contemplation.

The spiral structure of the shell is a symbol marking time. The shell resembles a copper pipe, with the help of which Man declares his victory and triumph over the elements to all.

"HORN OF BABEL" by Vladimir Kush.

Signed and Numbered Limited-Edition Print on Canvas (38.5"x50") Inquire at [email protected] for price and availability.

The horn resembles the Tower of Babel- a symbol of human arrogance. According to the Bible, the people conceived the idea of constructing a tower high enough to reach heaven (or, possibly, to conquer it). Thus, they wanted to put themselves at the same level as God and were punished for it. The Lord deprived them of their common language, and they could no longer understand each other. The heritage of the collapsed Tower is a lot of people who don’t understand each other and aren’t inclined to come to an understanding. Using biblical legend, the artist develops his own artistic concept. His Babel horn of plenty is a creating rather than a destroying structure. It spills out on the coast over other, more modest buildings- one- storied. But people living in “horizontal” communities are known to be much more disposed to communicate among themselves and understand each other than the residents of the “vertical” apartment towers. Thus the horn of Babel becomes a symbol of prosperity created by the post-Babel, newly limited mankind populating new shores!
