Who remembers the Shoebox Float Contest?

For years, students from the region showed off their Mardi Gras spirit by turning simple shoeboxes into colorful parade floats.

Did you make one? Or do you remember seeing them on display? We'd love to hear your memories! Share them in the comments. 💜💚💛

The Mardi Gras Museum is beginning to explore new ways to bring Mardi Gras to life with hands-on workshops and interactive programs that celebrate Southwest Louisiana's rich culture, history, and traditions.

We're considering classes and experiences like:
🎭 Mask-making
🎨 Float design and creative construction
👑 King cake decorating

Now we'd love to hear from you! What kinds of demonstrations would you be excited to attend? Who do you know that would host a great workshop or event? Share your ideas in the comments!

Leave it to Lake Charles to turn Mardi Gras into one big tailgate party! 💜💚💛

Parades, gumbo, ice chests, lawn chairs, and enough food to feed the whole block. Our newest exhibit at the Mardi Gras Museum celebrates the sights and sounds of tailgating and parade day fun. You can even snap a photo of yourself and your krewe tossing beads from a Mardi Gras float!

We're open today from 10 to 5pm, so come check it out.

Washington Mardi Gras brought a lot of Southwest Louisiana spirit to the nation’s capital this past January, and Lake Charles' own Gray Stream had the honor of serving as King. He represented Lake Charles with such warmth and true Mardi Gras spirit.

You can now see his costume from Washington Mardi Gras on display at the museum. We're open Tuesday through Saturday from 10-5pm.

A real Mardi Gras krewe captain in Southwest Louisiana is part leader, part referee, part therapist, and part miracle worker. They’re the ones keeping the floats rolling, the traditions alive, and the whole krewe together when things get a little sideways.

This new exhibit in the Museum pays homage to the dozens of captains that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of their krewe.

Joe Lanza's animatronic is one of the first that greets you in the brand new Mardi Gras Museum, located at 701 Enterprise Boulevard in Lake Charles. Joe was a charter member of Krewe de la Famille and served as President of the Board of Directors for 22 years. He also was the Krewe's first honoree of the President's Award for Outstanding Service. In addition to his dedication to the Krewe, he served as President and on the Board of Directors of Mardi Gras of Imperial Calcasieu for several years. He helped organize the Mardi Gras Museum and also served on its board of directors. As recognition of his service to Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras, he was named Grand Marshall of the Lake Charles Merchant's Parade in 1993. We take immense pride in carrying on Joe's memory.

We're open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 5pm. We can't wait to see you!
