The story begins in 1841 when Sarah Ferrell expanded a small garden begun in 1832 by her mother, Nancy Ferrell. The land had been given to Sarah and her husband Blount by her father, Mickleberry Ferrell. Between 1841 and 1903, Sarah Ferrell developed “Ferrell Gardens” into one of the most widely acclaimed gardens in the Southeastern United States. After the Ferrells died, the property was purchase

d by Fuller E. Callaway and his wife, Ida Cason, who renamed the estate “Hills and Dales”. Callaway, a successful textile manufacturer, commissioned the noted architectural firm of Hentz & Reid of Atlanta to design a new home. The house was built on the site of the old Ferrell home and was completed in 1916. Ida and Fuller also restored the gardens, and added fountains and statuary to enhance the Italianate character of the garden. After Fuller’s death in 1928, Ida continued to live at Hills and Dales and to oversee the gardens until her death in 1936. and his wife, Alice Hand, took over the care of the estate. They continued to preserve the house and historic garden, while adding selected features until his death in 1992 and her passing in 1998. In accordance with the wishes of Alice and Fuller Callaway, Jr. the estate was given to Fuller E. Callaway Foundation and is now open for the enjoyment of visitors.

With all the time our docents have spent in the Callaway home over the years, some of them are bound to have a favorite artifact. Joyce Morgan Young, who has been a tour guide since 2011 and worked with our 5th grade program before that, had this to say about her favorite piece:

“My favorite is the bust of St. George, the Christian Soldier, purchased in 1915 in New York City for $45. For 110 years, he has been sitting on the mantle in the Dining Room, gazing at the studio copy of Madonna and Child!”

The bust, which was part of Fuller Sr and Ida’s original décor, is a copy of the marble figure created by Donatello for San Michele Church in Florence, Italy. St. George is also the Patron Saint of England, which is appropriate for the Callaway family, as they descend from Cornwall.

Next time you visit the estate, make sure to say hello to St. George - and Joyce, if she happens to be on duty!

When most people think of a trio, they think of music. At Hills & Dales, we think of flowers! Every week, our special trio of Elaine Clements, Mary Skandalakis, and Helen Phillips creates wonderful floral displays for the Callaway home. According to Tour Coordinator Haley Merciers: “Our guests love seeing fresh flowers in the home; it really brings it to life. Every time I go in the home, there is something different to see.” At the beginning of each week, the team harvests an assortment of flowers from the estate and uses them in their floral creations. The next time you visit, be sure to check out the flowers! A special thanks to Elaine, Mary, and Helen for using their talents to bring the garden into the home.

Some guests probably wonder why we talk about a "pool terrace" and yet, they never actually see a pool on the grounds....
When Hills & Dales Estate opened to the public in 2004, the pool was filled in with approximately 70 truckloads of pea gravel to meet safety requirements. Today, a fountain marks the center of the pool, and visitors walk where family and friends once gathered for a summer swim.
It's one of the biggest changes the estate has seen, and unless you've seen the historic photos, you'd never know there was once a swimming pool here.

A terrarium is a miniature, self-sustaining ecosystem and a beautiful, practical way to bring plant life into your home or office. In this workshop, David Brown will guide you step-by-step through building and caring for your terrarium while you design a tiny world that’s uniquely yours using a variety of plants, mosses, and decorations.

The kids and grandkids are back in school... which means it's the perfect time for a daytime date!

Take a stroll through the gardens at Hills & Dales Estate, wander the historic grounds hand in hand, then head into downtown LaGrange for lunch. It's a peaceful escape that's close to home, and you'll still have plenty of time to make it back for the school pick-up line.
