Man!!! It was hot today. I am so humbled when I see crowds of adults and children wandering the grounds and just being excited. I’m humbled when I see vendors show up every month in every type of weather condition. We exist because of the community. Thank you to the principals and Klein ISD staff that were champs in the dunk tank. Enjoy a few video clips I got while running around.

When AI Meets History: What Do You Think?

For many years, this photograph was the only image we had of Sophie Krimmel-Wunderlich.

The original photograph wasn't available to us. What survived was a photocopy of a photograph found in a book—dark, blurry, and lacking much of the detail the original image once had. That photocopy has been the image of Sophie displayed in the Peter Wunderlich House since the museum opened.

But now, in 2026, we have a new tool available to us.

Using AI, we can digitally enhance an old image like this—cleaning up some of the damage, improving the lighting and contrast, and bringing out details that have been difficult to see for generations.

The result is the image you see beside the original.

And suddenly, Sophie feels a little closer.

We can see her eyes more clearly. The texture of her clothing. Her hairstyle. The expression on her face. A young woman who died in 1911 becomes more than a faded image on a page.

But it also raises an important question for museums and historical organizations.

Is using AI to enhance historic photographs a good thing?

Does it help us connect with the people of the past in a way that a dark or damaged photograph cannot? Or does an AI-enhanced image—even when it is based closely on the original—risk creating something that looks more certain or authentic than the historical record actually allows?

We believe transparency matters. Whenever we use an image like this, it will be clearly identified as digitally enhanced from the surviving historical image. We also believe the original should remain part of the story, which is why we're showing you both.

Does seeing Sophie this way bring history to life—or does the use of AI make you trust the image less?

There isn't necessarily an easy answer. Let's discuss it.
