🎪 WHAT A WEEKEND! 👽🦍❤️

A huge thank you to Jo Cunningham for rolling The Freak Family Roadshow into One Mile Gallery—and to everyone who stepped inside, embraced the strange, and spent part of their weekend with this wonderfully unconventional family.

We loved watching people encounter the Roadshow for the first time: the curiosity outside the trailer, the surprise once inside, and the conversations that followed. What begins as a wonderfully bizarre roadside spectacle reveals itself as something much more tender—a celebration of family, difference, belonging, and all the peculiarities that make us who we are.

Jo’s project embodies so much of what we love at One Mile: art that is unexpected, generous, handmade, funny, a little unruly, and capable of reaching people well beyond the walls of a traditional gallery.

Thank you, Jo, for bringing your beautiful freaky family to Kingston. And thank you to everyone who came out and made the weekend such a great one.

The trailer is rolling into Kingston…

Jo Cunningham’s THE FREAK FAMILY ROADSHOW takes over One Mile Gallery for two days only.

Saturday, August 22 + Sunday, August 23
12–5 PM

Part roadside attraction, part immersive sculpture, part very strange family portrait, The Freak Family Roadshow invites you inside a vintage 1950s “canned ham” trailer to meet a gorilla mother, an alien father, and their unusual offspring.

Come for the spectacle. Stay for something much more tender—a funny, wonderfully odd meditation on family, belonging, otherness, and just who gets to decide what’s “normal.”

As Cunningham puts it:
“I hope to make art that is accessible and fun for everyone. I think art gets more and more enlivened the further it is from where it’s expected to be.”

🎪 THE FREAK FAMILY ROADSHOW rolls into One Mile!

For one weekend only, August 22–23, Jo Cunningham brings her wonderfully strange traveling installation to Kingston.

Housed inside a restored 1950s “canned ham” trailer, The Freak Family Roadshow is part roadside attraction, part immersive sculpture, and part unconventional family portrait. Step inside and meet a gorilla mother, an alien father, and their hybrid child—surrounded by toys, family photographs, tchotchkes, period music, and the trappings of mid-century domestic life.

Using the spectacle of the American sideshow as a lure, Cunningham turns the idea of the “freak” on its head, asking who gets defined as strange or other and revealing something unexpectedly funny, tender, and familiar underneath.

We love work that arrives outside the usual boundaries of the gallery, and this one literally pulls up on wheels.

Last day of FONTANELLE! đź’š

Today is your last chance to step inside Jess Stapf’s Fontanelle at One Mile. We’re open 12–5 PM.

One of the things we’ve loved about living with this installation is getting up close to Stapf’s extraordinary surfaces. She uses felted wool to build and transform sculptural forms, working the fibers into dense, tactile skins. It’s a wonderfully labor-intensive process (we watched it happen in real time yesterday!) and the evidence of the hand is everywhere—soft, fuzzy, irregular and very much alive.

Throughout Fontanelle, familiar domestic forms become strange little landscapes of saturated greens and blues, flowers, pattern and texture.

Great vibes at the gallery today! Such a fun afternoon at One Mile with Jess Stapf’s FONTANELLE 💚 — lots of visitors, conversation, and time spent hanging out inside Jess’s wonderfully strange and immersive world.

And a special bonus: Mark Hogancamp holding court in our “Mini Marwencol,” sharing stories and bringing a little Marwencol magic to the day.

Installation is nearly complete for FONTANELLE, Jess Stapf’s exhibition at One Mile, and the gallery has become an entirely different place.

After the urgency and political charge of A Complicated Union, we’ve loved watching the space shift so completely. Fontanelle creates its own immersive world that is part domestic interior, part landscape, part dream.

Stapf’s sculptural furniture seems at once familiar and wonderfully strange: lush greens, flowers, painted surfaces and unexpected textures transform everyday forms into something almost bodily.

This is one of the things we love most about installation: when an artist doesn’t simply put work in a gallery, but changes our experience of the gallery itself. With Fontanelle, you don’t quite feel like you’re looking at an exhibition. More like a different world.

And we’re very happy to be living in it for the weekend. 💚

Us cowgirls like to pack it all into one day, so we’re rounding up Giselle Potter’s Studio Sale into one big Sunday at One Mile Gallery.

For more than three decades, Giselle Potter has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in folk art, vernacular imagery, and narrative illustration. Through her paintings, drawings, and celebrated picture books, Potter creates idiosyncratic worlds populated by expressive figures, symbolic landscapes, and closely observed details of everyday life.

An acclaimed author and illustrator, Potter has illustrated more than thirty books, working with writers including Toni Morrison, Mary Pope Osborne, and Kate DiCamillo, while her editorial work has appeared in publications including The New Yorker. Across these varied contexts, her unmistakable hand remains central: intimate, psychologically perceptive, sometimes wonderfully strange, and grounded in the enduring possibilities of pictures as storytelling.

For this special one-day Studio Sale, Giselle will bring work directly from her studio to One Mile—an opportunity to dig through, discover, and take something home.

MARK HOGANCAMP: FILMMAKER

Mark Hogancamp has always thought of himself as a filmmaker.

He doesn’t make films in the conventional sense. Instead, he builds Marwencol—a meticulously constructed 1/6-scale world populated by dolls—and uses his camera to tell stories within it. Each photograph can stand on its own, but it is also a frame in a much larger, ongoing movie: characters clash, plots unfold, relationships change, battles are fought, and moments of extraordinary tenderness interrupt the action.

That cinematic quality is one of the things that makes Hogancamp’s photographs so compelling. His images have the drama of film stills: low camera angles, carefully staged lighting, shallow focus, implied movement, and an uncanny sense that something happened immediately before the shutter clicked…and something else is about to happen just after.

Hogancamp’s extraordinary life and work have themselves become the subject of films, most notably Jeff Malmberg’s acclaimed 2010 documentary Marwencol and Robert Zemeckis’s 2018 feature Welcome to Marwen, starring Steve Carell. His work also received an extensive early presentation in Esopus magazine, helping introduce the photographs and the elaborate narrative universe behind them to a wider art audience.

One Mile Gallery has been showing Mark’s work since 2012, and over those years we’ve watched Marwencol continue to expand, including new characters, new narratives, new photographs, and new ways of using this miniature world to turn lived experience into storytelling.

Most recently, Mark brought Marwencol to One Mile for a new shoot created in and around the gallery. We’re very excited that a new limited-edition print from the One Mile shoot will soon be available for purchase through our website.
