Audubon visited the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas in 1832. Audubon left Key West having sighted and drawn 22 new birds for his "Birds of America" folio. It is believed that many of those drawings were conceived in the Audubon House garden. Audubon's painting of the white-crowned pigeon features the Geiger tree found in the front yard of the house. The 19th-century home was built by Captain John H.

Geiger, licensed harbor pilot and master wrecker, who lived in the house with his wife and nine children. It was an era when shipwrecks occurred daily on the off-shore reef. It was a time of pirates and yellow fever, slave ships and Indian wars.

Sometimes, standing beneath the trees is all it takes to remember how small we are—and how extraordinary the natural world around us really is.

Some of the trees at Audubon House & Tropical Gardens have been growing, changing, and reaching toward the sun for generations. We’re simply lucky enough to stand beneath them for a little while.

Bring a loved one and come explore for yourself 🌸🐝🐦

A little throwback we love…A few years ago, we had the honor of being featured by Empowered, hosted by Meg Ryan—sharing the story of Audubon House & Tropical Gardens with a wider audience.

While the spotlight comes and goes, what makes this place special stays the same—history, nature, and the quiet moments in between.

Take a look back with us.

There’s a certain kind of light here you don’t quite notice anywhere else. It filters through the branches, dances across the leaves, and settles softly around you—turning even the simplest moment into something a little magical.

It’s all part of the experience at Audubon House & Tropical Gardens… you just have to slow down enough to see it.
