Wood River Museum of History + Culture

Wood River Museum of History + Culture Museum exhibits that enrich a sense of place in Idaho through sharing the history of the Wood River Valley, Ketchum, and the Sun Valley ski resort.

In February of 2014, the Community Library Association in Ketchum, Idaho began an exciting new program when it assumed operation of the former Ski and Heritage Museums. The Ketchum / Sun Valley Historical Society worked closely with the Library’s Board of Trustees and administration to transact this change in an effort to strengthen the museum’s presence in the community. The City of Ketchum—from the mayor to council members to Parks and Recreation staff—joined the effort, while the community enthusiastically supported it. This collaborative project presents tremendous opportunities for Sun Valley to share its rich historical traditions with local residents and visitors alike. Located in the historic Forest Service Park, the museum buildings feature two exhibition spaces and a collections center. Under the library’s direction, the 1933 buildings, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will showcase exhibits that detail the region’s cultural heritage: from the first inhabitants, to miners and ranchers, to destination skiers, to artists and athletes. Our history is diverse, and we will tell that story through engaging exhibitions and powerful programs.

As summer begins fading into fall, it reminds us of how big softball was at Sun Valley in the summertime. When Pat "Pappy" Rogers was the general manager for the Union Pacific, apparently almost everything stopped at the resort during staf softball games. Pappy Rogers was deeply competitive and was renowned for shouting "YOU'RE FIRED!!!!" instead of "you're out" at games.... often leading to employees thinking they truly were fired.

Pictured here at a summer game in 1941 are General George C. Marshall (on left in white shirt and tie), Packey Boyle (center) and Pappy Rogers (in vest and hat) face each other during Sun Valley employee softball game, Sun Valley, Idaho. Dorothy Boyle collection.

Does General Marshall's name ring a bell?
If you know much about US History, it might! Marshall served as the U.S. Army Chief of Staff from 1939 to 1945, overseeing the expansion and training of the Army from fewer than 200,000 personnel to over 8 million by the end of the war. His strategic planning and organizational skills earned him the title "the organizer of victory" from Winston Churchill. (And FYI, the Wood River Museum will be opening our newest exhibit in September titled, Words in War: Readers, Writers, and World War II.
