Harley Brown was raised in the Canadian town of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In his teen years, he and his family moved to the great "Stampede" city of Calgary, Alberta. It was there he went to the Alberta College of Fine Art and began to draw and paint the Old West. He also played the honky-tonk piano in an eccentric Calgary nightclub.

He has been a member of the National Academy of Western Art since 1977 and has acquired numerous awards in a number of national art events.

Newman Myrah (1921–2010) Born in Holdfast, Saskatchewan, Canada, Myrah moved to the United States early in life and was raised in Deer Lodge, Montana, a landscape that deeply inspired his later art. He established himself as a prominent commercial artist, art director, and freelance illustrator in Portland from 1949 through the late 1970s. By 1980, Myrah shifted entirely away from commercial illustration to become a full-time fine art painter. He became a charter member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group (NWR), a notable collective dedicated to Western regional art. His work is celebrated for its authentic atmosphere and rich storytelling, ranging from dramatic landscapes to everyday slice-of-life scenes on the range.

Newman Myrah (1921–2010) was a prominent realist-impressionist painter and commercial illustrator renowned for his evocative Western genre scenes. Heavily influenced by the legendary Western artist Charles Marion Russell, Myrah dedicated much of his career to capturing the spirit of the American West, focusing primarily on horses, cowboys, and Native Americans.

There is a beautiful tension between the absolute stillness of the snowy mountainside and the implied motion of the dark, unfrozen river cutting through the ice—a reminder of active nature ticking away beneath winter's quiet sleep.

This piece balances the cool, blue-gray tones of the sky, metal roof, and distant mountain shadows with the rich, warm oranges, yellows, and browns of the meadow and barn wood. Ogle utilizes thick, visible, and expressive brushstrokes—particularly evident in the textured field in front of the barn and the choppy reflections in the foreground water. Beautifully done!
