This is what preserving our story looks like. ❤️

The Black Joy Parade was more than a parade for HOW/ADMHM — it was an opportunity to bring history, family and community together.

Board members, volunteers, children and grandchildren walked alongside one another. Our historical reenactor connected with families along the route, and some of our youngest participants helped carry forward the spirit of the day.

These are the moments we treasure most , seeing history shared across generations and watching our community come together with pride and joy.

Thank you to everyone who walked with us, cheered for us, asked questions and helped make the day so memorable.

What a spectacular day of Black Joy, history, family and community! 🖤❤️💚

History on Wheels/African Descendants Military & Historical Museum was proud to participate in the 2026 Black Joy Parade in downtown Joliet.

We were joined by board members, volunteers, reenactors, children, grandchildren and family members, including Navy veteran Wayne Howard, who drove our ceremonial lead vehicle. It was especially meaningful to see so many families and children along the parade route enjoying the celebration and connecting with our history.

A heartfelt thank you to the Black Joy Parade Planning Committee, the City of Joliet, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who helped make the day such a success. Special thanks to Ernest Crim III for continuing to uplift, educate and celebrate our community.

As one of our board members shared: “Community is everything.” We certainly felt that spirit throughout the day.

The Black Joy Parade was held in downtown Joliet on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026. The parade began at 1 p.m. and led to a community celebration in the City Square downtown on Chicago Street.

This is an event for the entire family.

This Saturday, the Joliet City Center Partnership is hosting the Black Joy Parade and Vendor Event. This event is a free, family-friendly event designed to honor and celebrate the rich heritage, history, and contributions of Joliet’s Black community.

The parade will step-off at 1pm at the corner of Chicago and Benton Streets, and end at the Joliet City Center for a celebration that will continue until 5pm.

The afternoon festival will feature:

📻A live DJ and local band performances
🍟Local food trucks
👚Retail vendors highlighting Black-owned businesses
📰Community resource tables

Director of Administration Treasa Howard-Johnson’s dad is participating in Honor Flight Chicago today. We thank all of them for their service.
