This past weekend we were invited to join the Will County Historical Museum and Research Center at their annual membership banquet at the Lock and Mule. We enjoyed a great brunch and a program by Dr. Larry McClellan on the Underground Railroad in northern Illinois, where many communities in Will County played a pivotal role. Also mentioned was our founder Luther Johnson and the upcoming city counsel vote on November 21st to transfer the land lease to The H.O.W? Museum - History on Wheels from the Will County Historical Society.

The Joliet City Council tabled The H.O.W? Museum - History on Wheels request to transfer the lease of the land where the Casseday House resides until the November 21st meeting. Our vision is to transform the building into an African American Museum that will house the military history of our people. This history is so important because it goes virtually unknown and these men and women deserve recognition. Shout out to Doug Melville for writing the book “Invisible Generals”. This is the exact work that “H.O.W.?” does already and hopes to bring to the Cassaday House. If you are a Joliet resident and believe in our mission please come out and let the city council hear your voice.

Picture it, September 2020. 6 months into the Covid-19 pandemic. I turned 40 and my family gave me an outdoor surprise party that included a parade of my family and closest friends. This is a picture of me and my mom. This photo is a bird's eye view into my relationship with my mom. She's one of my best friends. None of us would have thought that a little under two short years later, my mom would be diagnosed with two cancers, lung and breast cancers.

The initial reactions were shock, sadness, tears. However, if it's one thing I know for certain, God is a healer and a restorer of health! With Faith, much prayer, meditation, fasting, believing in what God can do, medical treatments doctors, my dad taking her to every doctor's appointment/treatment and our family never giving up, today my mom stands and lives 100% remission from both cancers!!! (Shouts Out to the wonderful doctors at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL!)

My dad had his own fight with prostate cancer and has been in remission for over 10 years! There's no worse feeling than when it hit home again. I believe in God and know what the power of prayer can do. I also believe in cancer research and truly believe that as each day that passes, a cure will be found!

Because of this, I am dedicated to helping in the fight to find a cure. Starting this month, for every wedding, social event or corporate event that is booked with Madison ElyseEvents, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to cancer research! I've seen first hand what research, the right medicine and treatments have done for my mom and dad. I want as many people as possible to have the same testimony as them!

The George Washington Casseday House in Joliet, built in the 1850s, first was moved out of the way of a gas station development and now ownership is being transferred to a group that wants to use it to highlight African American history in Will County.
