A great man...

My father died this morning in hospice at age 94 1/2. James Garfield Underwood...He was a teacher and coach his entire working life and he came to a small town in the Mohawk Valley of Upstate NY after graduating from Cortland State Teachers College in NY that is now SUNY Cortland! He was a legendary JV and Varsity football coach with a lifetime record of 152-27-3 during his career. He coached nearly every sport during his tenure at Johnstown High School. When there was a coaching vacancy, he would fill it and his athletes would be successful. He fielded teams of champions and molded young athletes into fine young adults. He was also a highly successful ski coach landing some of his athletes on junior national and national teams. I remember once after a winning season he was offered a college coaching job and he told the administrator, “Thank you but this is what I was supposed to do with my life!”
He was an incredible motivator of kids and a father figure to many kids who had come from families with family issues. He was a teacher that saw the good in all kids... He was a man of the highest level of character and humility. For the kids who were not athletes he started fly tying club, gymnastics club and took kids on trips into the wilderness in his beloved Adirondack Mountains. He never made decisions, except what was in the best interest of young people. He was a beautiful person and found his calling in guiding kids into adulthood. He coached athletes that went on to become Division 1 NCAA coaches and Navy SEALS...
He gave every child time effort and energy, because that is what he signed up to do. I spent his last days with him and my Mom and thought of how beautiful a life it is to be a coach... to be a teacher...
The love that those thousands of lives he touched now comes back to him in emails and texts and letters and words written and spoken. That is the pay for the life you give to kids! He was happy to have had the opportunity! He will be missed! JU
