TWO CHANCES TO GET SPOOKY! Create your own layout for a spooky, fog-ridden scene featuring bats or a raven against a misty full moon. Stencils and masks make drawing minimal. Most of the image is created by smearing pastels and pouncing acrylic paint!

FIRST opportunity is Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 6-8 pm at the Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts near Mayfield, NY. The class will be offered a SECOND time at Memorial Hall Cultural & Arts Center from 6-8 pm, Friday, Oct. 30. MHAC is located on the third floor of Schine Memorial Hall, 40 N. Main Street. Gloversville. Register on the Paul Nigra website for the Tuesday class and by calling Cheryl Bielli for the Friday class at 518-752-9696.

Watch for more Halloween art fun for families at the Schine Building: free open house with Trick ‘r’ Treat crafts from 11-1 pm Sat. Oct. 31 and a Sip (Soda) & Paint from 2-4 (4:30 as needed) pm. ‘ACORNS AND OAK LEAVES’ PROGRESSION — I started this pastel sketch of acorns and oak leaves with two young students at Wednesday’s after-school kids’ art class at Schine Memorial Hall in Gloversville, NY. An hour and some change later, it became the finished drawing you see here, the sample for Wednesday Oct. 21’s “Acorns & Oak Leaves” chalk pastel workshop for adults, also at Memorial Hall. Pre-registration is required at 518-752-9696. Pastel is fast, forgiving and richly colored when you layer it. Come join me for this loosely rendered design!

RARE PET CARICATURE — I rarely do character sketches of pets because they often evolve into pet portraits. It’s a struggle for me to capture the texture, complex highlights and shadows on an animal’s fur in the time it takes to do a relatively quick sketch of a human. Human skin is generally smoother, often less reflective and has fewer markings, so it doesn’t take as much study. Oh well, I learned by studying “Cookie” here and hope her owners will be happy with the likeness. Please call 528-752-9696 for price estimates if you are interested in a pet portrait.

GETTING ‘LOONY’ AT THE SCHOOLHOUSE — Many thanks to the Peck family of Peck’s Lake, NY, for allowing the Peck’s Park Museum and Schoolhouse to be used for a late-season loon painting workshop Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11. While I learned that not all old-time desks bolted to the floor will accommodate adult legs, we made do with five desks and a folding table I happened to still have in my car after a festival Saturday. We accommodated eight participants with me, Mrs. B, at an easel and troubleshooting down the aisles. No one quite finished, but everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, from first-timers to those with more experience, did a great job! Thanks to all! Participants’ homework is to work on their loon’s reflection and ripples on the water. The Schoolhouse will open again in June through Labor Day 2027 Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY— (WOW! What a whopping wad of w’s!) Anyway, all alliteration aside, I started this watercolor sample for the autumn farm we’ll be tackling Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 pm at the Memorial Hall Cultural & Arts Center, 40 N. Main St., Gloversville, NY. The art space is on the third floor. As you can see, it works to make changes to the lighting, color saturation and even the layout. Preregistration is required for the workshop by calling or texting instructor Cheryl Bielli at 518-752-9696. Fee is $25.

HOUSE ORNAMENT ORDERS DUE — I completed and delivered the last of three ornaments depicting camps on Green Lake to a repeat customer Friday. She was very pleased. I had a lot of interest in house portraits from camp owners in Northville this weekend, and I can’t stress enough that orders for Christmas gifts should be made in October. I can only get to so many, so please contact me soon. Thanks!
