As summer comes to a close, we took advantage of the sunny weather and walked around the Mana Contemporary campus. So many aspects to see and explore!

We look forward to so many artful events this Fall:
· The opening of: “Before Identity Takes Form”, a solo exhibition by Mana Contemporary Studio Artist Kota Onouchi on Friday, September 11th as part of JC Fridays
· The continuation of the Pierogi Gallery Flat Files residency with over 800 pieces of artwork that can be purchased to start or expand your art collection
· Fall Open Studio on Sunday, October 25th – our studio artist community is ready to engage with you, talk about their process and sell you some art
· Monira Foundation public programming
· More new exhibitions still to be announced

A huge thank you to Duda Penteado, Jersey City Cultural Affairs, and the City of Jersey City for once again partnering with Mana Contemporary to bring the Jersey City Youth Mural Program (JCYMAP) to our campus! And for Mayor Soloman for visiting the JCYMAP Artists- the superstars of the program!

We love seeing the energy JCYMAP bring into the building, the care everyone puts into mentoring the students, and—of course—the beautiful murals that help make our City more vibrant.

A special thank you to LEDI for enriching the program through your teachings and for embracing the goals and vision of JCYMAP.

And thank you to Mural Painters, Inc./Murals of America for generously donating the paint that helped bring these works to life. And a huge shout out to our Mana Studio artists who lent their time, passion and experience to the program.

We’re proud to be part of a program that gives young artists the opportunity to learn, create, collaborate, and leave their mark on Jersey City. We look forward to celebrating the program and the students’ work during our Fall Open Studios on Sunday, October 25th!

“Before Identity Takes Form”
By Artist: Kota Onouchi

Please join us at Mana Contemporary to celebrate the opening of “Before Identity Takes Form”, a solo exhibition by Mana Contemporary Studio Artist Kota Onouchi.

Before identity takes form, names, definitions, and meanings remain open, unfixed, and undefined. The moment we attempt to describe something through language, it begins to take on a particular meaning.

Onouchi’s work explores this space before definition: the moment before identity takes form and interpretation becomes fixed. Through painting and printmaking, he seeks to make visible what exists before language—what has not yet been named, defined, or fixed.

“I started as a figurative painter and found myself interested in philosophy, abstraction, and spiritual concerns. I was attracted to the inner power of forms and how they create a conversation layered with energy and emotional experiences. I have developed a personal vocabulary through layers of drawing, painting, scribbling, tracing, rewriting, constantly adding dimensions, and shaping pieces. This new alphabet speaks of the forever growing ‘thread of existence.’ My work often emerges from chaos, revealing a specific personal order that feels very right to me.

Understanding that the body is a shell, but the inner workings are felt and create a manifestation in this material world. I work with many pieces that build into a harmonious balance, thereby touching the element of “oneness” and how everything is connected to create the world as it is.

Combining and building is also a part of my process; some works are total shapes that become wall constructions, giving the appearance of floating off the wall.”

From emerging voices to established artists, Flat Files offers a rare, inclusive snapshot of contemporary practice—alongside salon-style installations and larger works throughout the space.

Originally launched in Brooklyn in 1994, this evolving exhibition has traveled internationally and now lands at Mana, spotlighting 30+ artists from our own community.
