I took my first pro image of this scene 25 years ago (on my web site), and have stopped by to photographed again, periodically during the strongest color years. Have been trying to time it with fog a few times, but didn't pan out. Well, this morning last week, it did:)

The Maine Central Railroad, that some of my uncles and grandfather worked on, used to run twice a day directly behind our house in the village. We would sometimes foolishly run along side, then jump on, grabbing the ladders on the side of the rail cars, knowing that it would need to slow down coming in to the village, where it would add engines to make the trip up the steep notch. Sometimes we were cursed and chased by the railroad employees for doing it. Surprisingly, no one ever got hurt, but was a super dangerous thing to do. To think as teens, we would play on all the trestles in Bartlett and Crawford Notch, even jumping or diving from some. We used the tracks to get to swim holes, friends houses, and sometimes simply to investigate.

I have wanted to attain a photo from here for many years, but the very short window of opportunity, combined with the need to staff my gallery 7 days/week during peak foliage, has always prevented me. But this year, with the exceptional foliage early in the notches, I figured I’d close the gallery once, to give it a shot. I scouted it last month first, initially using an old familiar bushwhack, rather than walking the entire train line to get there, shorter and steeper. But to my surprise, it appears the Railroad cleared all kinds of debris from the side of the tracks, and dumped it all over the embankment on the final approach, creating some 20’ of a thick tree/debris barrier, to prevent coming up this direction.

Instead, One month later, I decided to climb the tricky drainage of the Bemis Brook to get here. I set up the tripod and waited. Then I took multiple images as it approached, and then went past me. This was my favorite of the sequence.

Yesterday, I ventured to the other side of the Kanc, to revisit this birch path, which is becoming quite busy nowadays. So much, I felt a little rushed, with a group from NY there also first thing. And the Kanc coming home was brutal with traffic.

I have to admit, shooting for over 30 years, social media has brought the end of the quiet solitude shooting moments, that brought me out in the first place.

Addendum: This post was not derogatory in nature, but simply a longing for earlier, less busy days. I am native born in Bartlett, as was my father, with my family here since the 1800's, so I know every nook and cranny there is. And the irony is not lost on me, that my art brings people here also. I have been photographing the White Mountains for over 30 years, and anyone who knows me, knows I typically do not reveal the location the picture is taken from, unless it its an obvious iconic location that is already known. Same goes for swimming holes and favorite wooded spots. I was not photographing on the Kanc, but sometimes have no choice to use it to get where I need to go, on the other side. I have no animosity, simply melancholy for the old days. Just like my father was, in his later years.

The foliage this year is off the hook! driving random Forest Service roads the last couple days, things look peak (I like a little green, with the reds full) in Crawford Notch, thru Twin Mt., to Jefferson and Randolph. Absolutely spectacular!

Here's my follow-up to yesterdays post. What a difference a week makes. Visiting one of my favorites, for the second time in a week, I again got up at 3:30am to summit Willard for sunrise. As is typical, the pre-sunrise is what it's all about, and I finally was there for a real WOW burner:)! It was one of those rare ones that was so colorful, it painted the ledges and foliage with it's warm glow. I even had to change my usual composition a bit, to get the best of the color and clouds.....and I didn't see a soul for the entire hike:)!

Sunrise from Mt. Willard. One of my favorite hikes, I have done in all seasons, in all weather, at all times of day and night. The first time I recall, is when the Bartlett Library and staff, used to have a book mountain club, where there were hikes all summer/all, and you got to hike the next one, each time you have read a book. That was when I was around 8 years old. Iv’e done it at least once every year since, often 2-3 times per year, and many times during Covid. I’m now sure I have hiked it over 100 times (guessing I’m in the 120-130 range).

I have some awesome winter and fall images from Willard, but my summer ones, which most hikers are asking for, were all rather ok. Nothing special. So last week, I saw a forecast for possible good clouds/color, and I tried again for a good sunrise image. Which involves getting up at 3:30am, the usual morning routine, and then driving to the trailhead, to be on the summit for pre-sunrise at 5:30.

I arrived at the trailhead in the dark at 4:45am, donned my pack and headlamp, and headed out into the night. I’ve always enjoyed hiking in the dark, with the near complete silence, except for the sounds of a nearby brook, or early morning bird song. It was the same beautiful silence this morning, and I arrived as planned at 5:30. When I arrived, I could already see the clouds had mostly moved out earlier than expected, meaning once again, I will not get the “WOW” summer image I was looking for.

Nonetheless, I adjusted my camera settings and started taking a couple shots in the early light. While waiting, a couple young lads, looking all of 18-20 years old, had also hiked to catch the sunrise. Being young and brash, one of them was hiking with his shirt off, in hand. We had a pleasant conversation, while I waited for better color…..which never materialized. Eventually I packed up my gear/hat/gloves etc, and bid the adventurers adieu.

The funny thing is, about 1/3 of the way down, I decided to take my fleece off and put it in my pack. To my surprise, in my haste packing up and talking at the same time, I had inadvertently packed the shirt of the shirtless one. Doh! I figured he’d be fine, so I simply laid the shirt down on a rock in the middle of the trail, and headed the rest of the way down. I would love to have been a fly on the wall, when they packed up to head down….. “hey, I think that guy took my shirt” lol:)!

While this image was an improvement over my best summer one from this spot, it still lacked the WOW factor. So I would have to get up again at 3:30am another day, to try again, ugh. That day however happened rather quickly this week, and I will be posting those images tomorrow….stay tuned, because they definitely have the WOW factor!

Wildquack Duck Race this weekend!

Dear Members and Supporters,

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce needs your help.

Our annual Wildquack Duck Race is celebrating its 36th year this coming Saturday. As you may know, the event was rescheduled from last May due to weather. While everything was originally set to move forward with our regular vendors, we have unfortunately encountered several last-minute cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances.

Our regular Key Club volunteers are unable to secure qualified mentors for the day and have had to step down, leaving us without anyone to run the children's games and activities. Additionally, our major fair food vendor and several individual volunteers have also had to back out.

We are turning to our community to help us find replacements so we can make this event a success. We are looking for:

- Food vendors
- Face painters
- Individuals or groups to run children's games
- Vendors interested in setting up a tent to sell goods

Please note that anyone working with children or serving food must have the correct credentials and insurance. In lieu of a formal fee, we simply ask that if you do well financially, you consider making a donation to the event.

View from Cathedral Ledge, North Conway, NH - People come from the world around, to scale these ledges. Growing up here, in our teens we used to hang out on top here, a fair amount.

Of course, I've photographed many times from these ledges, just a few miles from my house. But something was always lacking, and consequently, a picture from the ledges has never adorned my gallery walls. But this past week, I finally got some beautiful clouds to compliment the scene:)!
