An interactive experience.
Located in Independence, Iowa and the heart land of America, Heartland Acres exhibits agricultural innovations, implements and displays which engage, inspire and enhance visitors as they gain a better understanding of agriculture. The entire museum acts as a learning center to engage visitors as they seek information about our agricultural heritage and modern day agricultural implements and issues. Hands on activities are available to further help visitors grow their understanding of agriculture.
Take a journey through the history of farming, from the mold board plows of Iowa’s first settlers to modern biotechnology. The machine shed exhibits tractors and implements from days gone by as well modern equipment when available. Many horse drawn implements and historic tractors are on display throughout the year. The museum’s one-room schoolhouse provides a special learning experience for student groups, showing what it was like to attend school before indoor plumbing, backpacks and the Internet. As an added bonus, visit Cars of Yesteryear to see one of the Midwest’s most unique classic car collections from a horseless carriage to the elegant classics and the 60’s muscle cars.
Located within a short drive, is an old order Amish community with shops and historic farms still farmed with horse drawn implements. Many gift shops and restaurants to satisfy a variety of appetites are found in downtown Independence and make for an enjoyable experience for the whole family. Motor coaches find the campus easily accessible right off of highway 20 at exit 252 between Waterloo and Dubuque, Iowa. Heartland Acres is also the future home to the Buchanan County Freedom Rock. Painting of the rock will commence this summer. The museum has winter hours Monday through Friday from 10 am-2 pm thru April. Summer hours will be announced closer to the spring. Tickets for the museum displays are $5 a person. For more information or to organize a tour outside of regular business hours please contact Leanne at [email protected].
