The Huntington Militia - 18th Century Living History Men, Women, and Families with Children reenact 18th Century civilian and military life at local, regional, and national events.

The Order of the Ancient & Honorable Huntington Militia is an 18th century living history organization, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and NYS educational corporation based on Long Island, NY aimed to preserve local Revolutionary War history. Today marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn (aka Battle of Long Island), fought on August 27, 1776 — the first major engagement after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Militiamen from Huntington were among those who took up arms in this pivotal battle — mainly tasked with driving cattle away from British hands.

As we remember the sacrifice and resolve shown on this day, we honor all who defended their homes, their neighbors, and the cause of American Independence.

Today, July 22, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the day Huntington first heard — and celebrated — the Declaration of Independence! On this date in 1776, the Declaration arrived in town and was read aloud to a crowd gathered on the Green - a day that has become known as Huntington Independence Day.

This past Sunday’s reenactment (July 19) brought that moment back to life — from the post rider’s arrival to the reading to the creation of the Huntington Liberty Flag and the King George III effigy.

Two and a half centuries later, we’re still honoring Huntington’s patriotic spirit. HUZZA FOR AMERICAN INDEPENDENCY!
