Today marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn (aka Battle of Long Island), fought on August 27, 1776 — the first major engagement after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Militiamen from Huntington were among those who took up arms in this pivotal battle — mainly tasked with driving cattle away from British hands.
As we remember the sacrifice and resolve shown on this day, we honor all who defended their homes, their neighbors, and the cause of American Independence.
