Last week we shared this breathtaking piece on display in our current exhibit. But did you know this painting by artist Alan Sundal depicts an actual rescue off the coast of Hull by #JoshuaJames?

From a 2015 article from HLM's own Vicki Stevens describing the rescue of the ship Ulrica:

'In 1896, at the age of 70, James was thrown from the surfboat while underway to the wrecked schooner Ulrica. A newspaper reported, “The captain did not immediately rise, and a cry arose that he was lost. As he rose, however, the cry changed to one of joy from every heart. Then it was that the fortitude of the man was shown. Splashing his way shoreward he at once directed the maneuvers of his men as coolly as if nothing had happened.
James and his crew carried on to successfully rescue Ulrica’s half-frozen sailors, earning Silver Lifesaving Medals."

In the pictures below, you can see Joshua James in the rescue boat leading the dangerous rescue at the ripe old age of 70!

#ThrowbackThursday

From the #HLM archives, a commemorative poster from the HLM Maritime Festival in 2009. Planned around the tall ships visit to Boston, this event was one for the books!

A BBQ and music at Fort Revere Fort Independence, Newfoundland rescue dog demonstration, and a visit from the Shallop, the sister ship to the Mayflower.

We also had the honor of hosting rowers from across the pond, hailing all way from the Netherlands!

The day was bookended with a pancake breakfast and a potluck at the Salt Water Club.

Amazing, exciting, and (by the end...) exhausting day with a great time had by all!

Facebook friends: Were you at this event?! Comment below and tell us what you remember from this *epic* day!

Ahoy friends!

*DID YOU KNOW* that the model ships on display in our exhibit 'Miniature Ships, Epic Stories', are replicas of *real* ships?

Each model has a story. Here is just one of them. Whether you are a history buff *or* interested in the hobby and process of model ship building ....there is something for everyone in this exhibit.

Between the stories behind the ships, and the painstakingly detailed craftsmanship when you see each in person- this is an exhibit to appreciate up close and personal.

In light of the covid pandemic, we have created a new system to ensure you can enjoy the museum at a leisurely pace, in a safe environment. Using the link below, there are timed slots you can reserve. Your party will have the opportunity to explore our space and have it all to yourselves. How fun is that?! It may not be exactly the same as 'Night at the Museum', but it's close!

On the eve of Veterans Day, the HLM team is thinking about, and grateful for, veterans across all branches of service.

We are proud and honored to help preserve legacy and history of Joshua James, and all the other brave men and women in the United States Coast Guard who came after.

Tomorrow, as we move through our respective days, lets make sure to take a quiet moment or two and reflect on, and truly appreciate, the sacrifice and service of our veterans.

It's hard to find words to fully express our gratitude. Thank you to all who serve, and have served. Thank you to veterans families who serve in different ways back home. We salute you!

Tulsa retiree's work used to help put ships in space. Now his full-time hobby is model ships from seafaring history.

Have you thought of trying a new hobby as we start to hunker down this winter? If you have ever thought about model ship building, our new exhibit, "Miniature Ships, Epic Stories", might be just the motivation you need to try your hand at a model ship!

Great interview from a 2018 Tulsa World article, spotlighting a model ship enthusiast, and why he enjoys this rewarding and fascinating hobby.

“If I’m sitting around not doing anything, I’ll head back there and work on the ships,” said Thomson. “Sometime I wake up in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep. So I’ll head back there and work on the ships until Pat comes and gets me to go back to sleep.
“So you can usually find me back there working on the ships. Obviously, I really enjoy it." It is almost like Thomson spent much of his life training to build ship models. It takes an incredible amount of patience and attention to details.
“Working on writing computer programs is similar in many ways to building these model ships,” said Thomson. “If you are writing a computer program, you have to be very detail-oriented. You have to build it from scratch. You have to follow a specific plan. You can’t rush through a computer program because if you miss one detail then you have to go back and start over."'

Tulsan Ron Thomson once worked as a computer specialist at the Kennedy Space Center. Now that he's retired, he works on assembling model ships, which can take years to build.

Understanding Ship Model Testing - Construction & Types Of Facilities

Come check out our new exhibit, 'Miniature Ships - Epic Stories', model ships from the #HLM collection, as well as pieces on loan from local artisans and hobbyists.

#FunFactFriday Did you know that model ship building is a crucial component of modern #navalarchitecture? Check out this interesting peek into a unique career path.....

'Not only for ship designers, but even in vast research and development field of naval architecture or ocean engineering studies, model tests are crucial for study of waterborne structure such as offshore rigs, oil platforms, oil wells, floating harbours or jetties, etc. In recent times, the emergence of ship design software and other path-breaking simulation systems have eased the complexities of manual model testing operations to a considerable extent. However, the significance of physically testing a model still remains as even the software-based approaches have their limitations and often rely on the empirical relations established through physical tests.'

What a beautiful day it has turned into...sunny, very little wind and a bit chilly but still very nice here at the Hull Lifesaving Museum. IMPOTANT: It is not to late to join us at 3:30 for pumpkin carving which will still leave time for trick or treating. The donation is $15 and includes everything! We have the pumpkins (basket ball size), carving tools and LED lights along with some light snacks and cider. Come on and join the fun!

Is the Snow Row still on for Saturday?
I attended the Sea and Sky Exhibit yesterday, where I had the pleasure of meeting DJ who was working the exhibit. He is such a nice guy! He is knowledgeable, friendly, kind, engaging, and funny. We talked about the art and the artists, many of whom we were friends in common. His knowledge and his personality made the visit extra awesome. Just wanted to say thank you. :)
HLM - The best place to be!
I can't find the link to register for the Snow Row on the store page. If it isn't up, let folks know when it will be. Or make it a bit more obvious if it is. Thanks
Thank you to the Hull Lifesaving Museum for showing "The Finest Hours" movie based on an incredible true life story! "The Finest Hours" had a profound impact on me, giving me a deeper appreciation for the many brave men & women who risk their lives in service to - and for the sake of - others. The movie forces one to be pragmatic about faith, and it reflects how a small (coastal) community comes together in strong support of its own.
Wolfie and I invite you all to a row/paddle and sailing invasion of Club Edge this Sunday, Nov 3rd, 2:00-7pm for a friendly adventure -- destination from 89 Edgewater to be determined based on wind & weather -- and potluck.
