We are *so* excited to invite you to experience a little piece of history that has a *big* legacy: The Fuller Shallop from the Mayflower is coming for a visit to Hull! This is a once in a lifetime visit that you don't want to miss! Details below...

Event: Fuller Shallop Stopping In Hull As It Sails Home to Plymouth
Date: Monday, June 14, 2021
Hours: Viewing Hours 11:00 am - 7:30 pm
Location: Pemberton Pier at Hull Gut

The Fuller Shallop, a restored replica of the original shallop on board the Mayflower, and now a complement to the restored Mayflower II, is scheduled to arrive in Hull on Monday, June 14. The 33-foot, open vessel will tie up at Pemberton Pier for public viewing and for discussions and demonstrations by the Captain and crew until 6:00 pm that evening.

Following public viewing, the Captain and crew will then be available at Shipwreck'd Restaurant for discussions with interested visitors from 6:00 to 7:00 pm followed by a 30 minute talk and slide show on the patio. Shipwreck'd will be open all day for meals and beverages as you enjoy your visit to the Fuller Shallop, and they invite you to stay a while longer to watch the sunset on Hull Bay. The shallop will depart Hull on Tuesday morning.

The original shallop was carried on board the pilgrim ship Mayflower, intended for use in exploring the surrounding waters and did so up through Boston Harbor and farther north. Plimoth Plantation built this replica of the 33' vessel many years ago and over the past two years it has undergone a refit at Lowell's Boat Shop in Amesbury. As part of the vessel's reintroduction in Plymouth, the shallop will be touring several ports as they head back home to Plymouth.

HUUUUGE shout-out to Jessica and the crew from Toast! Earlier this year, they held a raffle to raise money for several organizations and charities....and thoughtfully included #HLM!

In any circumstance, this is a beautiful gesture...

However, it is not lost on us just how amazing a gift like this is coming off the rollercoaster of Covid we have all been on this past year and a half.

Toast is a small business, in an industry we all know was hit particularly hard during these decidedly heady times. For Jessica and her staff to take the time and do something like this for us?

Well, we are rarely at a loss for words, but words don't seem to capture what this simple and kind gesture means to us here at Hull Lifesaving Museum.

For those of us who know already, Hull is a pretty amazing place.

We are one big family on this little peninsula of ours, and Toast certainly has underscored how amazing this community, this family, is to us here at the Museum.

If you are looking for an amazing breakfast or lunch this weekend....please visit our friends, our extended family, at Toast!

From the Coast Guard Compass, on the origins of Memorial Day. (More info in the link below)...

'According to Professor David Blight of the Yale University History Department, the first Memorial Day was observed by formerly enslaved black people at the Washington Race Course (today the location of Hampton Park) in Charleston, South Carolina. The race course had been used as a temporary Confederate prison camp in 1865 as well as a mass grave for Union soldiers who died there. Immediately after the cessation of hostilities, formerly enslaved people exhumed the bodies from the mass grave and reinterred them properly with individual graves. They built a fence around the graveyard with an entry arch and declared it a Union graveyard. The work was completed in only ten days. On May 1, 1865, the Charleston newspaper reported that a crowd of up to ten thousand, mainly black residents, including 2,800 children, proceeded to the location for a celebration which included sermons, singing, and a picnic on the grounds, thereby creating the first Decoration Day.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General Logan in his 11th General Order, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.'

MOORE'S HISTORY OF HULL - 1902
What a beautiful day it has turned into...sunny, very little wind and a bit chilly but still very nice here at the Hull Lifesaving Museum. IMPOTANT: It is not to late to join us at 3:30 for pumpkin carving which will still leave time for trick or treating. The donation is $15 and includes everything! We have the pumpkins (basket ball size), carving tools and LED lights along with some light snacks and cider. Come on and join the fun!
Any word on the Head of the Weirever virtual race?
My Illumination in honor of my Brother Sean. We added a Forever Flare in his honor as of this year. We miss him very much!
Is the Snow Row still on for Saturday?
I attended the Sea and Sky Exhibit yesterday, where I had the pleasure of meeting DJ who was working the exhibit. He is such a nice guy! He is knowledgeable, friendly, kind, engaging, and funny. We talked about the art and the artists, many of whom we were friends in common. His knowledge and his personality made the visit extra awesome. Just wanted to say thank you. :)
HLM - The best place to be!
I can't find the link to register for the Snow Row on the store page. If it isn't up, let folks know when it will be. Or make it a bit more obvious if it is. Thanks
Thank you to the Hull Lifesaving Museum for showing "The Finest Hours" movie based on an incredible true life story! "The Finest Hours" had a profound impact on me, giving me a deeper appreciation for the many brave men & women who risk their lives in service to - and for the sake of - others. The movie forces one to be pragmatic about faith, and it reflects how a small (coastal) community comes together in strong support of its own.
Wolfie and I invite you all to a row/paddle and sailing invasion of Club Edge this Sunday, Nov 3rd, 2:00-7pm for a friendly adventure -- destination from 89 Edgewater to be determined based on wind & weather -- and potluck. If you arrive after 3 (by land or by sea) we will leave a floatplan and cryptic treasure map for you to follow.
