WWII Veteran, Battle of the Bulge survivor and good friend of the Collings Foundation, Dr. John McAuliffe has passed away. When we think of what is good, kind, thoughtful and hard working, we think of John. In his obituary his family wrote: "In lieu of flowers, as a tribute to John's goodness, his family suggests that you take someone you love to lunch or dinner and let them know that you love them." (that is just the way John was) In honor of John, we suggest you do that.

During the WWII Re-enactment weekend, author Marina Kirsch will have a presentation on her book Flight of Remembrance.

Marina wrote: "A family story of surviving war fought on home soil on the losing side is one that is seldom heard here in the U.S. since that only happened here during the Civil War. The other interesting twist is my father's dream for a career in aeronautical engineering and the fact that both he and my grandfather became instrumental in the U.S. space program after immigration in the early 1950s. My grandfather Ernst Dutzmann was drafted into the German army after fleeing Latvia for Germany before the first Soviet takeover of the Baltic States and due to his advanced engineering skills, was sent to Peenemünde to train under Wernher von Braun for V-2 rocket inspection. In early 1944, he was sent to work at the top[ secret underground installation of Mittelwerk as chief inspector of the V-2. After immigration, my grandfather and father were both hired by Chrysler Missile and Space Division near Detroit where my father led a team of engineers who designed and built components of the Saturn 1B rocket that were later used successfully in all of the Apollo Moon Missions."

Today, September 18th, 2019, the American Heritage Museum honors our dear friend Clarence Smoyer, WWII Veteran and Tank Ace, as he is awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic actions in March 1945 in Cologne, Germany. The surprise ceremony came as Smoyer visited the World War II Memorial as part of a number of visits planned around the new book "Spearhead: An American Tank Gunner, His Enemy, and a Collision of Lives in World War II” by Adam Makos

Smoyer was hailed as “the hero of Cologne.” His tank commander told him that he and the rest of his crew would receive Bronze Star medals for their heroism in combat.

However, a few days after the battle, U.S. military police saw Smoyer standing near German kids who wanted chewing gum, Makos said. The MPs cited him for breaking an Army rule that forbade U.S. soldiers from talking with Germans.

“They pulled up, and they busted him. They said, ‘We caught you talking to these German kids, fraternizing,’ and he lost the medal over a stick of gum.”

His award of the Bronze Star today, after 74 years, was witnessed by hundreds of visitors and friends, including American Heritage Museum Executive Director Rob Collings who took these photos. Smoyer was wearing the tanker jacket given to him by AHM volunteers from the US Army Brotherhood of Tankers.

Congratulations sir! We thank you!

04/10/2019

Today we honor Lt. Colonel Richard "Dick" Cole, the last of the Doolittle Raiders, as we learned of his passing on April 9th, 2019 at the age of 103. Lt. Col. Cole was the co-pilot of B-25 #1 that launched off the USS Hornet on April 18, 1942 on a one-way mission to hit the Japanese homeland only months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

We were honored to have Lt. Col. Cole fly with us as co-pilot in our B-25 "Tondelayo" with the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour several years ago in Texas. Our pilots remarked that he flew the B-25 "like he last flew it yesterday". He visited us several other times over the years and was always an incredible gentleman to all visitors.

Godspeed Lt. Col. Cole. You are missed.

Our son Owen hasn’t smiled so much as he did today!! Thank you so much to the staff, especially Jim who went above and beyond taking the time talking to Owen and even taking him out back to see some extra tanks 😊
Wow, this is the best collection of Armor I have ever seen in the U.S.

My visit here put such a big Smile on my face.
A great place to visit.
It's a world class museum here in the US with some 1 of a kind artifacts and so much more. You won't be disappointed.
Any museum passes available via local libraries?
Very impressive and well done.
Congratulations on your debut! I went through the military exhibits today. A tremendous amount of work on a terrific collection. The introductory talk was certainly appropriate as the next generations know oh too little about the sacrifice and the horror we went through. I was especially pleased to see the Soviet equipment. They really did develop some impressive iron and steel. You must have some real experts and sources for parts to be able to restore these pieces so well. I've seen hundreds of pieces of machinery made into battle monuments in Eastern Europe and even crawled around some tanks and planes just sitting in fields as monuments. Most of those are just gutted shells. Never saw a Higgins boat before. A lot smaller than I anticipated. The German stuff was interesting too, given their head-start and their long-standing engineering/technical prowess. I was pleased to have this in "my own backyard". The curation was well-done. Brief yet very informative. I would like to come back and see the aircraft and automobiles your site references. Is that something for the future? Best wishes.
