The Normandy landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history, with nearly 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers participating. Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000, with 4,414 confirmed dead. The American Heritage Museum has one of the few remaining Higgins boats that participated in the landings. The museum does a great job of showing that 1) tanks are cool and 2) war is terrible. The museum is well laid out and shows the progression of armored vehicles through the years, as well as the some of the unfortunate reasons for their...More

Today we honor Lt. Colonel Richard "Dick" Cole, the last of the Doolittle Raiders, as we learned of his passing on April 9th, 2019 at the age of 103. Lt. Col. Cole was the co-pilot of B-25 #1 that launched off the USS Hornet on April 18, 1942 on a one-way mission to hit the Japanese homeland only months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

We were honored to have Lt. Col. Cole fly with us as co-pilot in our B-25 "Tondelayo" with the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour several years ago in Texas. Our pilots remarked that he flew the B-25 "like he last flew it yesterday". He visited us several other times over the years and was always an incredible gentleman to all visitors.

Godspeed Lt. Col. Cole. You are missed.

Seventy-seven years ago, at 7:48 AM Hawaiian time, 353 aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet and bases in Pearl Harbor... the catalyst that launched the United States into World War II. Tragically 2,403 Americans were killed with an additional 1,178 wounded. Today, December 7th, we honor those lost and honor those who fought as a result of that day.

The Collings Foundation is proud to operate the last surviving fighter aircraft from the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk 41-13297. Please consider helping support this important aircraft that will tell the story of the "Day that will live in infamy" in the new American Heritage Museum
