This amazingly energetic abstract collage was an art piece that our customers father created and she inherited. With such powerful use of a deep black brush strokes, we decided to pick out the less prominent colors in the piece to use in the framing. We chose an orange fabric mat and a modern blue and copper frame. Now the black stands out as the strongest element while the colors have been emphasized through the framing. Now this family heirloom will be preserved for future generations!

Today’s the day! For the past several weeks, we’ve shared the stories behind Camera Work, explored the history of photography, introduced you to the art of tintypes, and offered a glimpse into one of the most influential publications ever devoted to photographic art.

Today, you can experience it all in person.

Camera Work: Objects & Souls officially opens today at Hudson Art & Framing, bringing together a rare collection of original photographic plates published between 1903 and 1917 in the landmark journal Camera Work. On loan from the PhotoSeed Archive of Worcester County, these remarkable works tell the story of a time when photography was beginning to earn its place as a respected fine art.

Beginning at 1:00 PM, photographer Bruce Robert Wahl will be creating authentic tintype portraits live in the gallery using a process that has remained largely unchanged for more than 150 years. Watch each portrait emerge by hand, learn about one of photography’s earliest surviving techniques, or take home your own one-of-a-kind tintype portrait.

Then, from 3:00–5:00 PM, join us for our opening reception as we celebrate the exhibition, the artists and visionaries behind Camera Work, and the enduring power of photography to preserve not just what we see but how we see and experience the world.

Some art exhibitions require a trip to Boston. Others mean spending the day at a major museum. This one is happening right here in downtown Hudson.

For a limited time, Hudson Art & Framing is hosting Camera Work: Objects & Souls, an exhibition featuring original photographic plates from the groundbreaking publication Camera Work (1903–1917), on loan from the PhotoSeed Archive of Worcester County.

It's an opportunity to experience works connected to one of the most influential publications in photographic history without leaving MetroWest.

On opening day, you'll also have the chance to watch photographer Bruce Robert Wahl create authentic tintype portraits using a photographic process that dates back to the 1850s, a craft few people ever have the opportunity to see in person.

Sometimes the best way to appreciate photography is to slow down long enough to really see it.

It may be hard to imagine today, but there was a time when photography wasn’t welcomed into galleries or museums.

Many believed it was simply a mechanical process, a way to document the world rather than interpret it.

Artists like Alfred Stieglitz disagreed.

Through Camera Work and the artists he championed, photography began to earn recognition as a legitimate artistic medium capable of conveying mood, emotion, atmosphere, and imagination. The debate shaped the future of photography.

This exhibition offers a glimpse into that turning point, when photographs stopped being viewed as simple records and started being celebrated as works of art.

Beginning at 1:00 PM, photographer Bruce Robert Wahl will be creating authentic tintype portraits using techniques developed in the 1850s. Visitors are invited to watch the process, ask questions, and even commission a handcrafted tintype portrait of their own.

Our opening reception begins at 3:00 PM, and everyone is welcome.

What exactly is a tintype? 📷

Long before digital cameras, and even before photographic film, photographers were creating images by hand using the wet-plate collodion process.

Developed in the 1850s, tintype photography creates a direct positive image on a thin metal plate. The plate is carefully prepared, sensitized, exposed in the camera while still wet, then developed and finished by hand. The process requires patience, precision, chemistry, and a little bit of unpredictability... which means no two tintypes are ever exactly alike.

On Saturday, August 15, photographer Bruce Robert Wahl will bring this historic process to Hudson Art & Framing as part of the Opening Reception for Camera Work: Objects & Souls.

From 1:00–5:00 PM, Bruce will be creating individual tintype portraits during a limited number of reserved sessions. You'll have the opportunity to experience the photographic process and leave with a one-of-a-kind physical photograph created during your visit.

Even if you're not booking your own portrait, you're invited to stop in and see the process firsthand as each image is prepared and developed.

Step into the history of photography during the opening celebration of Camera Work: Objects & Souls at Hudson Art & Framing.

At the Opening Reception, photographer Bruce Robert Wahl will be offering wet-plate collodion tintype portrait sessions from 1:00–5:00 PM. During the portrait sessions, visitors will experience the historic photographic process from preparing the metal plate and exposing the image to developing and finishing a one-of-a-kind portrait. Guests may reserve their own tintype portrait, created using the same process practiced since the 1850s. Space is limited, and advance reservations are recommended.

Beginning at 3:00 PM, join us for our Opening Reception to celebrate the exhibition, meet fellow photography enthusiasts, artists, collectors, historians, and members of the community, and explore this remarkable collection in person.
