Join The Mammoth Site and Art House Blackhills Hot Springs this month for a special exhibition benefiting the Site!

Mammoths: Echoes of the Ice Age is a benefit exhibition for The Mammoth Site here in Hot Springs, SD featuring the work of renowned wildlife artist Esther van Hulsen.

As de-extinction moves from speculation toward reality, the exhibition invites us to imagine what it might be like to once again share our landscape with mammoths.

Van Hulsen’s paintings blur the boundary between art and artifact, using materials with direct ties to the mammoth itself. Works were created with pigments containing traces of woolly mammoth DNA, brushes made from mammoth hair, and paper handmade from recycled Asian elephant fiber. Each mammoth painting is also accompanied by strands of mammoth hair recovered from specimens preserved in the Siberian Arctic.
