What an incredible kickoff to the Alaska Historical Society Annual Conference!

We are thrilled to welcome historians, educators, and culture-bearers from across the state to our beautiful home here in Homer. Last night's opening reception at The Porcupine Theater was the perfect way to spark new conversations and reconnect with colleagues. Pratt Museum Executive Director Whitney Harness and Education & Public Programs Manager Hannah Wolfe-MacPike thoroughly enjoyed the evening, especially the delicious food from PikaPika Bento!

A massive thank you to former Pratt Museum board member Dr. Jeff Meyers and the team at the Kachemak Bay Campus for hosting the event this year. We are also deeply grateful to Homer Mayor Rachel Lord and Representative Sarah Vance for welcoming conference attendees and showing such strong support for our community.

This year's theme, "New Directions in Alaska History," resonates deeply with our work at the Pratt, where we strive to balance the rich history of our region with forward-looking perspectives.

Here's to a week of inspiration, collaboration, and deep dives into the stories that shape us!

We were so thrilled to read this wonderful post from one of our recent visitors. They got to experience Kat Owens’ incredible exhibition, Entangled and Ingested, and even added their own stitches—using a repurposed Nuts.com bag—to the collaborative 50-foot humpback whale project!

Art has a unique power to bring us together and shine a light on critical issues like marine plastic pollution. Seeing our community and visitors connect so deeply with Kat’s work is exactly why we do what we do.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, stitched, and shared their stories with us during this residency. 🐋✨

Plus, we always love an excuse to skip Monday, especially when it involves traveling through time and across the world! 🌎✈️

“Entangled & Ingested” features twenty-two life-sized, hand-sewn portraits of wildlife harmed by marine plastic pollution made from unrecyclable plastic waste.

Join us Friday evening from 4 - 6pm to tour the new exhibition and enjoy complimentary admission as part of our monthly First Friday series of free gallery openings.

Meet artist Katharine Owens and don’t miss her Artist Talk at 5pm, an eye-opening exploration of how plastic waste affects our oceans and the creatures that call it home.

Ready to travel back in time? Join us at the Pratt Museum for our new monthly Homesteader Game Night series. Every second Friday, we are bringing history to life through play. Come explore new games, revisit old favorites, and learn more about Homer’s historic homestead era. It is the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends or meet some new neighbors.

We will have light refreshments on hand, including coffee generously provided by Hills Bros. Coffee. This series is completely free to attend, with a suggested five dollar donation, thanks to supplies and funding support from The Homer Foundation.

The next game night takes place Friday, October 9, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the downstairs classroom. Bring your favorite game face and we will see you there. For questions, reach out to Hannah at [email protected].
