Celebrate the season of the floating seeds with artist and cultural expert Argent Kvasnikoff at our upcoming art and culture workshop, The Colors of Ditushi. 🌿✨

What to expect:
🌾 An introduction to Indigenous ethnobotany.
🗣️ A Nichił and Dena’ina language guided trail walk on the Pratt Museum Forest Ecology Trails.
🎨 An immersive art project exploring the color theory of firew**d and local flora.
🌸 Come dressed in bright purple or fuchsia to celebrate the colors of summer firew**d.

Pratt volunteer Margi has been hands-on with Kachemak Bay’s ecological history this week reviewing an incredible 40+ year archive of macroalgae samples meticulously collected and preserved by local scientist, educator, and homesteader Jane Middleton. Jane taught math and biology at Kenai Peninsula College and volunteered in many classrooms, fields, beaches and labs and was a fixture in the Homer community.

This historical collection offers an invaluable look at the changing waters of Kachemak Bay and the enduring legacy of passionate community members who have taken time to learn more and study it.

Did you know that seaw**d is the colloquial term for macroalgae, which refers to algae ranging in size from a few millimeters to over 60 meters in length, making them visible to the naked eye, unlike microalgae which are microscopic?

Rain or shine, Homer shows up! Earlier this month, local residents and visitors turned out in full force to celebrate America's 250th birthday at the Homer Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Parade. Our dedicated Board of Directors proudly represented the Pratt Museum with their special themed float, "Quilting American History."

Our float celebrated the role of quilting throughout the history of the United States. Quilting bees were social gatherings where local community members came together as intergenerational teams working towards a common goal. The quilts produced warmed our bodies as well as our souls and honored life's milestones using patterns designed to reflect the stories of our lives.

The Pratt Museum would like to especially thank the Kachemak Bay Quilters who have supported the Pratt for over 40 years through yearly donations of beautiful raffle quilts as well as quilts crafted for the Museum's permanent collection.

Celebrate summer with the Pratt Museum!

Storytime at the PRATT is a weekly educational event hosted by our education staff.

WHEN: Every Tuesday at 10:30am

WHO: Ages 3 - 10 (siblings welcome as well)

WHAT: Read a themed picture book, tour our galleries, and participate in a hands-on craft or activity.

COST: Free

Learn ways of working with nettle as a fiber plant with award-winning local multi-media artist and fiber explorer Carla Klinker. During this two-day class, you’ll learn about nettle’s history and then dive into the raw material – harvesting, processing, and creating your own cordage to take home. All supplies provided. Responsible teens and adults only. Friday, July 17, 5-7pm & Saturday, July 18, 1-3pm. Registration required - visit our website to reserve your spot.

Working with nettles is a seasonal and tactile process that invites community connectivity. The long bast fiber of stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, has been used to make string and cloth for thousands of years across the world. Nettle grows wild and abundant in marginal land and often considered a w**d. In folklore, magical nettle garments appear often as powerful symbols of perseverance, devotion, protection, and transformation.

Recently we hosted interns and seasonal staff from some of our local partner organizations, including Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, KBNERR, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Naturalist Training. Our staff shared the history of the Pratt Museum, current Pratt projects, and an intro to museum cultural items/traditional ways of knowing. Tours of our Native Plant Collections, Forest Ecology Trails, and indoor exhibits were also part of the all day training.

This annual Naturalist Training is a weeklong event, with interns and seasonal staff touring each organization to learn more about their missions, the work they do, and the why behind it all. We love collaborating with our sister organizations to deepen our engagement with this special community!
