Bunnell Street Arts Center is a not-for-profit organization that serves artists and audiences of all ages with opportunities to explore, present and create new work. Bunnell presents monthly visual art exhibitions, contemporary Alaskan artwork for sale, lectures and readings, dance, music, theater and performance art, film screenings and dialogues with artists. Also offering over fifty educational

activities per year, Bunnell's outreach programs include artist's talks, workshops for youth and adults, and Artists in Schools programs for over Kenai Peninsula K-12 youth.

Luminous Threads opens this week at Bunnell Street Arts Center, alongside an upcoming two-day nettle weaving workshop with artist Carla Klinker. ⁠

Here are the details for both events:⁠

🧵 Exhibition Opening⁠
Join us this First Friday, September 4th, from 5:00–7:00 pm for the opening reception of Luminous Threads. Carla Klinker will give an artist talk at 6:00 pm. The exhibit will be on display through September 29th.⁠

🌿 Nettle Weaving Workshop⁠
Tuesday & Thursday, September 8 & 10 | 5:30–8:30 pm⁠
Explore the history and craft of working with raw nettle. Over two evenings, you’ll learn harvesting and processing techniques, creating your own cordage to take home or contribute to a collaborative net project.⁠

Open to responsible teens and adults.⁠
All materials provided; bring a snack to share.⁠
Limited to 12 participants.⁠
Sliding scale ($80–$120), with scholarships available.

🎨 Calling all Kenai Peninsula Artists! Join us for an upcoming info session & compensated in-person training to learn how you can become a teaching artist in local schools for the 2026-2027 school year!⁠

📍 Where: Homer Public Library⁠
📅 When: Saturday, September 12th | 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM⁠

Whether your focus is ceramics, theater, storytelling, filmmaking, painting, printmaking, or dance—Bunnell Street Arts Center’s Artist in Schools (AIS) program brings working artists like you into KPBSD classrooms for 1 to 3-week paid residencies.⁠

How to join:⁠
1️⃣ Complete the AIS interest form at the link in our bio to reserve your spot for the Sept 12th training (or learn about online options/commensurate experience).⁠
2️⃣ Get trained, join the roster, and start bringing your art to local youth.⁠

What an incredible summer of music it has been! 🎶

Thank you to all the incredible artists and collectives that visited us this summer and to all our wonderful sponsors who made it all possible. 🙏

Beginning as a Covid-relief program in 2020 to support musicians and community when concerts and gatherings were not possible, Bunnell Arts by Air features Alaska and visiting musicians, and is partially funded by the Alaska State Council on the Arts Community Arts Development grant, The Homer Foundation and a TourWest grant from Creative West .

The Bunnell Arts by Air program is presented in partnership with KBBI AM 890. Support for Bunnell programming is also provided by local business sponsors: Uncle Herb’s, Global Credit Union, Juneberry Lodge, Citizen Salmon, The Porcupine Theater, Kenai Peninsula College, Pier One Theatre, Inlet Law, Ulmer’s Drug and Hardware, and the Inlet Trading Post.

For four decades, Steven Gordon has been rendering Southcentral Alaska’s magnificent landscapes with a master’s touch. A long-time educator at UAA and APU and beloved artist-in-residence across the state, his painterly realist works are held in private and public collections nationwide.⁠
