Painted in 2018, "Standing Watch" captures the iconic fire tower at the top of Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak). The fire tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1938. Stones gathered from nearby French Creek were used to construct the tower. All of the building materials were hauled by man and mule along the three-mile trail to the summit.

Jon and Gail Crane set out every winter to spend their days on the beaches of Baja. They live in their camper while Jon works on his paintings, Gail writes, and Cosme the cat looks for new adventures. Featured is a photo from 2025 when Jon was working on his most recent badlands painting, "Where Spirits Still Roam."

Painted in 2010, "Awakening" captures the iconic Pasque flower. The flower serves as South Dakota's state flower. Each year, the first sightings of pasque flowers announce spring is “Awakening” in the forest. Jon and Gail often find these waiting for them as they return home from their winter travels.

In 1990, Jon Crane visited the town of Stonington, Maine. Incorporated in 1789, Deer Isle is a small village well known for its granite quarries that were used to build the Smithsonian Institution. Today, Deer Isle is home to around 2,000 people. Jon created his watercolor painting, “Deer Isle,” based on this trip. Years later, he inherited a sketch of the same area done by his great-great-grandfather, Alfred Waud. Unbeknownst to Jon and decades apart, they both found this area to be artistically compelling.

Jon Crane has painted the Historic National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish two times over the years. First with the "D.C. Booth House" in 2011 and again with "Preserving the Past" in 2012. Both paintings capture some of the most iconic buildings in Spearfish, South Dakota. The D.C. Booth Home was built in 1905 as the residence for the first superintendent of the fish hatchery in Spearfish.

WHICH DO YOU PREFER?
Jon Crane has painted the iconic Moonshine Gulch twice over the years. First, with "Moonshine Gulch Saloon" in 1992 and secondly, "Warmth Within" in 2009. The paintings capture the small town of Rochford, located near Mystic, where Jon and Gail live. The Moonshine Gulch Saloon is a great little bar where you can get the best greasy burgers in the Hills and wash them down with a cold beer or two. During the winter, there is always a warm fire going, but the real “Warmth Within” is the people.
